Are any of you homeschoolers - or for that matter other teachers - familiar with the Muzzy BBC program for foreign language for very young children? Any comments?

You might ask over at the Vegsource Unschool Message Board. Those ladies might be able to help you.

Don't know about that program, but I've heard good things about Learnables and Rosetta Stone.

Here's one person's opinion I found online for you at http://www.susanwisebauer.com/K8curr14/messages/2510.html:

We used it for Spanish (it is the same story for each language). My kids learned a little but what they learned was not worth the price.
And I agree with your friend - the characters are not very moral. I was not too pleased with the storyline. As a BBC program, I expected something similiar to a PBSKids program. It's definitely not even close. My son's favorite quote from Muzzy is Spanish for "Take him away". Not what I was expecting him to learn. (We don't use it anymore.)

Never heard of that one. The Rosetta Stone and Power-Glide are popular ones. We use Instant Immersion TOPICS which has a fun approach for very young kids (and oldsters too)...they don't need to read even.(Got this excellent interactive CD program at BJ's Warehouse.) Then we have some bilingual cartoon story books from Usborne and a Random House Living Language program with activities, games and stickers.

rats. thank you, though.
i suspected that the moral content might not be so swell....and it is certainly a pricey package.
i will use extreme caution before i take that plunge.

Be sure to check out your local library as a resource. If it is of any size it should have language cassettes, CD-ROMs, or videos available.

I have a friend who homeschools who used Muzzi (Italian)for his kids. They really seemed to enjoy the tapes and seemed to learn quite a bit.
