New Jersey has already enacted the nation's first "smart gun" law. Now the gun-control debate has shifted to ballistics fingerprinting and legislation that would require repair shops to install these markings on firearms.
The bill's sponsor, Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), said it is part of a much broader ballistics fingerprinting initiative that has already passed the Democrat-controlled Assembly and is awaiting action from the evenly split Senate.
Weinberg's bill is still in committee, but she called it a crucial component to state's gun-control efforts.
"This bill was designed to answer those naysayers who say you can't do ballistics fingerprinting because criminals can make changes to obfuscate those markings," she said. "We're now saying it's illegal to make changes."

Idiocy. Using a firearm will change these characteristics. These people are too ignorant to have any say of the lives of ordinary citizens. It's time to flush the toilet.

I'd sue the dirty scums if they did that to my firearm. I'd argue that they did it without my consent. I mean are they going to actually tell you up front. If the gunsmith going to say, "By the way I have to add this fingerprint to your firearm."

I also suppose that if you ever want to swap out parts on your gun you just committed a felony. THe next time you take that gun in for repair you'll be behind bars.

...Me thinks it's time to be leaving... Personally - when the despicable Florio administration made their intentions clear; I rented a truck, packed up, and ran like hell. Good Luck to you.

This is a formal gun registration program. The next step in this is to require the installation of such markings in ALL guns in NJ. They're not going one step at a time any more, they want it all right now.

Her goal is not to stop criminals. Her goal is to make gun owners INTO criminals... That, and to kill off the retail gun sales and gunsmithing in her state. I suspect that if this passes into law, a few gunsmiths with bad attitudes could tie this system up in knots. For example, it'd be interesting if *every* "fingerprint" collected pointed to a firearm owned by some law-enforcement officer...
To: Puppage
The only thing lacking here is for the NJ legislature to pass a law requiring all crimes committed in the state to be committed by fingerprinted guns. <\sarcasm>

Hi Puppage - I've looked all over the website you linked and can't find this article. I also just tried Google and nothing came up. It's probably right under my nose, but could you offer some assistance in locating the page with the original article? Thanks...
