"Gorbachev was a wise man. He knew that after all these years and all these wars and all these deaths and all the money spent, the Americans would not quit until the Soviet Union folded. So, for the sake of his people, Gorbachev folded the Soviet Union. And Reagan got the credit. "

You know, this is so typical of libs. They get almost all the facts, and they get them right -- but then amazingly come to the wrong conclusion. What the Zotted Sot failed to mention, or admit, is that libs and dims would have quit the Cold War in a heart beat if they had been allowed to do so. If it were not for the preserverance of the conservatives -- especially Reagan -- the cold war would not have been won. Reagan's "Star War's" defense was an ante the USSR just could not call, and thus began the admission by the Ruskies that they could not equal our spending. And everyone here should recall the the libs fought Star Wars tooth and nail. So, Zot Sot, the credit really does belong to RR.

Oh, this is a good one! "Gun owners, come back to the Democratic party! Only the rich make money from dividends! Reagan was a con artist! Gorbachev won the Cold War!"

If I didn't personally know people who really believe this stuff I'd suspect this particular one was pulling our collective leg. In order:

Gun owners are highly unlikely to return to the party that is trying to regulate them into submission. Yes, it's a class war, and no, we didn't start it - things are the way they are because gun owners have been declared a social class by the class warriors in the Democratic party and that war has been vigorously pursued in court and legislative chamber. This moron is in the position of wondering why the fellow he's been punching doesn't like him any more.

The biggest stock-owning social class in the United States isn't a bunch of tycoons, it's the middle-class folks who have pension funds, 401Ks, and holdings in mutual funds. It is these who will benefit from reductions in capital gains taxes.

I had exactly the same suspicion of Ronald Reagan in the early days - the problem was that underneath that veneer of earnestness was a core of sincerity. Many people assume that he was a con artist because that's what they've come to expect from politicians in general. Reading what he (and not a ghost-writer) actually wrote brings one to the convictions not only that he really believed every word, but that he was, by and large, right.

Gorbachev wasn't the guy who shut the plant down, he was the janitor who turned off the lightswitch as the last guy out.
