President Bush is planning to side with white students against the University of Michigan in a landmark affirmative-action case before the Supreme Court this week, said a source close to White House deliberations.

Although White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Mr. Bush is still "listening to both sides of the case," another source said the president is unlikely to abandon his long-standing opposition to racial preferences at public universities.

It's worse, doug. With "affirmative action" all over the place, a black suffers even when not offered extra points, or even if he refuses them. In every job he gets, his colleagues will always have that nagging doubt, is he really qualified, or is he an Affirmative Action brain surgeon / accountant / chief programmer?

This is absolutely corrosive of teamwork and collegiality, and does damage to every black, everywhere, whether he had the dubious benefit of affirmative action or not.

Which, of course, is its purpose - get off the liberal plantation by your own hard work, and we'll make sure you wear a stigma for the rest of your life. So squat down, stay dumb, and vote Democrat.

Mr. Bush, . . . instituted a policy of "affirmative access," which guaranteed college admission to students ranked in the top 10 percent of their classes academically — regardless of race.

These was not a good idea as the top 10% of a poor performing school get admission before better students statewide.

I agree with you to a point. There is much work for good men and women regardless of ethnicity left to do in this matter. However, on a personal level, I retired from Ford Motor Company at the beginning of 2001. Old white male conservatives are not wanted. I, and many others, are angry about the situation. I worked for an africanhyphenamerican who was an affirmative action promotion. I've talked to rocks that were capable of more intelligent reason and discourse. Regardless, there were competent black managers in our office and company that the old white boys had no problem working for and with positively and cooperatively. They were embarassed by his presence and actions. The point being in my own experience that the boob that I last worked for was known for what he was, and the crucial differences could be discriminated. He wasn't the reason I left, he helped me make the decision with his racist ignorant arrogance.

"President Bush is planning to side with white students"

Amen. I also reject that characterization. It is about eliminating discrimination on the basis of skin color. Why should Colin Powell's or Harry Belafonte's children receive "extra points" for admission over a poor white kid from West Virginia. This advantage continues through graduate or law school and even to the workplace. Asians are left out of the equation (except to limit their numbers) because they are high-achievers. I hope Bush has the cajones to weigh in on this case and put his money where his mouth is. It is the principled thing to do regardless of the predictable outcry from the Democrats.

It is dangerous to accept the characterization of President Bush's stand by a liberal journalist. Some on FR do that way too much. How many times have you seen liberals MIScharacterize Bush's position? For some, it is just another reason to denigrate the President. Even with this good news, some on FR have found a reason to fault him. It's disingenuous.

Never mind...Bill Sammon is no liberal. However, the rest of what I said stands. This is the writer's characterization of the President's stand. Let's see what the brief says before we start criticizing. Also, I have a feeling he will address race in the State of the Union...at least I hope he does. It doesn't really matter what newspapers or news readers say...all that really matters is what the President says. Let's give him a chance. What he did in Texas tells us where he stands, IMO.

How about if Dubya came out and said,
"This Adminsitration has chosen to stop pandering to the poverty pimps and race-mongers who purport to represent a small minority of American citizens while lining their own pockets and advancing their own political agendas. Instead, and at the risk of alienating the 3 or 4 Blacks who might someday vote Republican, we have chosen to speak out in favor of what is right, instead of merely what is politically expedient."

Naw, it'll never happen...

While liberals are expected to sharply criticize the president if he sides with the white students, conservatives are expected to be deeply disappointed if he does not.

This is the understatement of the year. AA is MY ISSUE. If George doesn't do the right thing, I'm going over to the Libertarians, even though I think they are a bunch of dope smoking slackers

But will the GOP cite "affirmative action" supporters as the ones who are racist in response to the predictable leftist propaganda?

Why should they? All that would do would be to cite the obvious while alienating people who we're trying to reach. Bush meant what he said when he said that he's a uniter and not a divider. Let's leave the divisiveness to the democrats.

The case is a political hot potato for the Republican Party, which is still smarting after a racial flap that toppled Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi from his post as Senate leader last month.

The media bias is showing here. Why is opposing racial discrimination a hot potato?

How about if Redbob just stayed on the subject of the thread, which is the Michigan case?

Instead, and at the risk of alienating the 3 or 4 Blacks who might someday vote Republican...

This demonstrates that you don't really want us around on this side of the political aisle. We're "insignificant" to you, and are therefore not worth any effort whatsoever.

Either the government will evolve into a colorblind meritocracy or our nation will continue to slowly come apart at the seams.

If true, bully for Bush. I sincerely hope the GOP comes out from under it's bed on this issue.
