Yep, I agree with you. For the most part, the Mexican population here is hard working and trying to be a part of America. That's why I think that they'll eventually succeed, where others fail. The best comparison that I've seen is to the Irish of the mid-to-late 1800's.
For their part, the politicians fall all over themselves to 'help' this 'disenfranchised minority'. Gov't programs, pure-Spanish language curriculums, etc. For the most part, the Mexicans don't want it.
I guess that the most feared words in the world are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help".
As an aside, there is a great guy from Mexico on our cleaning crew. Whenever I'm working late (all too often), he always makes it a point to talk to me. Wants to practice his English, you see. He says that he thinks when his English gets better, he can get promoted. I agree, and am always willing to talk. The rest of the crew are all from Haiti or Sudan. They think that he is a suck-up and make fun of him. Just a little insight into differences between the two cultures.
Well, in the beginning of America, the immigrants moved here, learned English, rolled up their sleeves and went to work. I am proud of them. This kind of immigration I am all for. But since 9-11, who in his right mind can trust any immigrant today? They all hate us. They all want America to just die! So......why are we still allowing them free access and access to our welfare programs. Too many of our own have lost great jobs because of our economy. Yet, the immigrants are still coming in. I can't for the life of me, understand what is going on behind closed doors. But I don't think I like it very much.
