Search circles back to valley

The effort to find Laci Peterson shifted back to the Northern San Joaquin Valley on Sunday, 24 hours after an intensive search of the San Francisco Bay turned up only a boat anchor.

Rural areas of Merced and San Joaquin counties were searched Sunday by law enforcement officers in the case of the missing 27-year-old pregnant woman who vanished Christmas Eve.

Modesto police said they will continue to search in the coming days but won't disclose details about where the investigation is headed.

"We have some specific things we are working on and places we want to look at, but we aren't going to release those locations," said Sgt. Ron Cloward, the officer in charge of the search. "I don't know if we will be going back into Berkeley. That will be decided when I sit down with the chief (today)."

Police spent four days last week going through the waters near the Berkeley Marina. Thursday, a sonar device detected an item on the bottom that looked like a human body. It was the anchor.

Scott Peterson, Laci Peterson's husband, told police he went fishing in Berkeley on the morning his wife disappeared. He told police he last saw her as she was getting ready to walk their dog in East La Loma Park at about 9:30 a.m.

While police continued their search Sunday, volunteers at the command center at the Red Lion Hotel spent most of the day making more fliers to be posted throughout the state in the hopes of finding Peterson alive.

Volunteers said they will continue to get the word out about Peterson, whose baby is due in mid-February. On Sunday, they trickled into the center and offered to post fliers throughout California.

"It has been a slow day, but we are still doing our jobs," said Judi McKinney, a volunteer at the center. "We will keep moving forward."

Scott Peterson showed up at the center Sunday afternoon and told some volunteers that the events of Saturday left him "emotionally drained."

"I'm kinda numb today," he said. "I'm speechless."

He has declined all interview requests.

Speculation is frustrating

His mother, Jackie Peterson, a regular volunteer at the center, said her son is under a lot of pressure because many people are assuming that he is responsible for the disappearance of his wife.

"Everyone always thinks the husband or the boyfriend did it," she said. "They have to put up with all of this simply because they didn't have a solid alibi."

I agree. Having seen close up the merciless hounding of an innocent person after a heinous crime, I'm speechless and numb that so many people here are so willing to believe the worst of someone WITH NO EVIDENCE.

well here is something, maybe LEO's haven't thought or have, but SP owns a landscaping business. Most likely he is using the Ford truck as a write of of numerous kinds, and deduct mileage, gas, insurance....etc... SO; if the fishing trip was personal, did he have a log book for accounting, deducing the mileage to and from, and calculate that on his books? If so, then those missing miles should give the investigators an idea of a circumference of the possibilities of dumping a body or not. Just wondering....If not, than he is committing fraud with, (ah oh), IRS.....

Also, was talking to a stranger who comes from Sonora, and at this steak house during either December or Jan, some of SP relatives were there. The gentleman I was chatting with, states, Laci side of relatives say and do one thing before media, and another behavior when media is not focusing on them... I don't know, but I did have a feeling attitudes are going to start flinging.

FYI:
From my doctor today, a specialist in delivering, reminded me of the attempted murder I believe in Antioch, whereas the husband shot his pregnant wife in a parking lot, and left her for dead. She had several bullet wounds taken to the body. She pulled thru, and so did the baby. The doc tells me he tells the husband the good news(assuming they didn't know he tried to kill her), that his wife and new born baby will survive, and are healthy. He told me the husband just stared with disbelief reaction. PD was there, which eventually lead to his arrest. The motive on this perp was that the dude wanted the insurance money, and had a girlfriend. He wanted his wife out of the picture. A true story... If any freeper finds the story, post it please... It was about 5 yrs ago.

If this posts several times, something on this link wouldn't get thru!....ergh!!!

"innocent until proven guilty"

Jiggyboy, did you miss the memo? We don't do that here on Free Republic. Instead, we let the media drag us along in their dramatic speculation, and then we condemn people purely on our suspicions and hunches.

Get with it, man. The husband is not acting right, so there you have it! He did it.

I hope to God no one I know is ever found dead. Not just because of the loss, but because of the lynching I could expect in the media (and here on FR.)

Max, sorry you had to experience this phenomenon close up.

that so many people here are so willing to believe the worst of someone WITH NO EVIDENCE.

Very true ! however, there is NO EVIDENCE this man is in the clear and good police action (nobody should question the Christianity of suspecting the last person who saw someone missing)requires that each case be dealt with great attention and detail and I am sure the police would like to move on but this character SP is making himself look suspicious. I am sure you would never have considered Susan Smith to have drowned her own children years ago since that would NOT have been Christian ? I think the Christian thing to do is ban together and share our wisdom and time in trying to resolve this mystery. For those giving up their time searching, I am sure they are expecting SP to expend his time also since they are helping him find his wife and future son. Of course he is in shock, but this would happen whether he was guilty or innocent.

Mr. P owns a fertilizer co. Has anybody checked the lime storage area yet? How far from his house is the warehouse? Close enough to release the dog and be sure it would go home? My scenerio: 8:45 p.m. 23rd. "Come on dear, let's go by the warehouse before we go last-minute Christmas shopping. I need to check on something. Bring the dog. He likes to ride." In the warehouse (isolated?) the dirty deed. Body buried under lime, which will dissolve the body in time. Release the dog. Sleep, get up and go fishing. Come home & report wife missing. Flaws?

This would certainly indicate he would have the equipment to either dig a hole or bury her in a pile of sand and gravel or dirt. Hope the cops are taking soil samples from all his stuff and inside the wheels of the truck. I would think nobody saw him at work either the way this investigation is going.

Crimes appear to be turning more violent.

The numbers don't reflect an inordinate number of kidnap-killings, but the savagery of the crimes seems to be escalating tremendously.

There was the mysterious Jon-Benet Ramsey case, Elizabeth Smart, Danielle Van Damme and, most recently, Laci Peterson -- all mysterious disappearances.

Little children and a grown woman less than a month from delivering her child.

Whether it's a matter of these sorts of crimes becoming simply the media's hot topic of the times or not, the simple fact is that the perception is that these crimes are becoming more frequent and much more violent.

Anyone now who works with the public knows the arrogance of some indivuals. This disapperence dose not supprise us in this day and age. After Jeffery Dalmer anything is possible.

Scotts Mother says "everyone thinks it is the husband or the boyfriend that did it"

What the heck is she saying here? Is she trying to say Laci had a "boyfriend"?

I've seen women walking their dogs, while talking on their cell phones. It's too coincidental that Scott just happened to leave his own Cell Phone in his Truck while he was fishing AND Laci just happened to leave her own Cell phone at home if she was walking her dog.

you know, I wanted to go over to the volunteer center today, and ask if there are any home videos to view of Laci, and was hoping maybe after that to catch a glimpse of SP..... What that would prove, don't know, but it sure would give me a feeling of good or bad!..

That just doesn't jive with me. Sorry, I have been around enough 'seasoned' officers, that I have been taught quite a bit on street sense in police work
And no, I am not a cop!

well, from here on, we'll just have to keep watch and with updates given, on just how well the in-laws really got along? Pressure is on all the relatives to figure out, the who, what, where, and why of Laci's disappearance. The investigators will be noting....

Maybe in some sense, MPD is correct in lying low with media blitz of news conference updates? (even as I think they got their butts chewed out by the Chief!)....Silence is golden and can be a tool, maybe teasing with tid bits of the ongoing investigations, and watch the behavior of the one you think is the primary suspect. But then again, maybe not!

You and "the Jiggler" have made a serious error! FR is NOT a court of law, it is not an investigative or enforcement arm of the state,...rather it is a place were insightful people can share their ideas.

We are all free to speculate on any topic. But when a spouse openly behaves in such an abnormal manner in a possible capital murder case in which his wife may be the victim, I think it appropriate to ask the same questions the police are undoubtedly asking, namely was he involved in her disappearance?

Did you go to the other long thread and see RGSpincich's webcam of the Marina?

RG is doing some good investigative research.

Take a look.

1. No body.

2. No witnesses.

3. Limited or no laboratory evidence conclusively or circumstantially linking Scott Peterson to her disappearance.

4. He has a lawyer.

5. He has kept his mouth shut.

6. He has not taken nor will he take a lie detector test.

7. Police are not able to question him nor call him a suspect.

If these points remain as they are Scott Peterson will never be arrested. I anticipate that after a brief peiod of time the house will be put up for sale, he will move out of the state, and will begin a new relationship with another woman.

Laci Peterson will become just another cold case. Her parents will die early with broken hearts. In ten years no will will even remember Laci Peterson's name.

I believe he has gotten away with murder.
