Bee Gees question brother's treatment

The brothers of the Bee Gee Maurice Gibb are seeking answers about his treatment in hospital in Miami. Gibb died on Sunday at the age of 53 when his condition deteriorated following a heart attack.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC, Barry and Robin Gibb said they were perplexed as to how their brother had been admitted with a stomach blockage - and then apparently died from another illness.

It's like a nightmare that you wake up to every day

Robin Gibb

In an emotional state soon after Maurice's death, the brothers said they were "devastated" and "completely pole-axed" by their loss and paid tribute to the "most sweetest, generous" man.

Barry Gibb confirmed he had not been present at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre for many of the key moments of his brother's treatment and said he had been told much of what he knew second-hand.

Fans were shocked at the singer's death But he said: "We will pursue every factor, every element, every second of the timeline, of the final hours of Maurice's life.

"We will pursue that relentlessly. That will be our quest from now on."

Rapid action

The hospital said it could not comment because of the protocol of patient privacy.

Barry Gibb said he had been told Maurice had been admitted to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after feeling unwell, been kept in overnight and suffered a cardiac arrest at 0400 local time .

He said he had been told the doctors had decided to take rapid action and had found the ill star was suffering from a "twisted intestine" which could have been a "birth defect". He said 80% of his intestines had then been removed.

Brother Robin paid tribute to his brother as "a very gifted man".

The Bee Gees will not disintegrate because we've lost Mo

Barry Gibb

"We're both devastated. We've actually been in shock for the last few days since Maurice was taken ill, and so this has all gone too fast for us.

"I still can't come to terms with it now. It's just almost like a dream. It's like a nightmare that you wake up to every day.

"It's going to take a long time even just for it to sink in.

"He was the most sweetest, generous of people you could ever meet."

Immediate presence

Barry added: "He was an extrovert and he would always be the person, he would never walk into a room, Maurice.

"Maurice would prance into a room, you know, and his presence was immediate."

He insisted the band would continue with just himself and Robin.

"Maurice will be a void, always in our lives and he will always be featured as the third member of the Bee Gees, no matter what we do.

"But one thing I will tell you is that the Bee Gees will go on. The Bee Gees will not stop here. The Bee Gees will not disintegrate because we've lost Mo."

Robin and Barry Gibb talk to the BBC "We're taking a lot of strength from each other"

What happen was their dad was in a band that did big band type music and when big band went away their style did not change with the times and his band was finished.

It was a lesson they learned from their dad. The Bee Gees did rock, they did country and disco and ballads. They decided early on that they would not let happen to them what happened to dad.

That was from 1997 and is a ballad religious type cd. Their next was a duet with Celin Dion. And then in 2001 the did a rock album with a Maurice song that makes Ozzy Osborne look like a pop singer.

This suprised me, because they were more than a 'disco' group.

True. My wife was a fan of the Bee Gees long before Saturday Night Fever. She feels that SNF wasn't there best work by a long shot.

Both albums went to #1 in England and in other countries around the world and Still Waters made it to #24 here in America.

It's been almost a quarter century since I heard something new by them on the radio.

Music is timeless. Entertainment is fleeting, temporary and disposable. Many people confuse the two.

I think nowadays people take surgery for granted. Like it's a totally routine thing. It's dangerous. Any surgery where they put you to sleep is dangerous. When they go mucking about in your abdomen, the danger goes up a lot more. Perforated bowels, obstructions, appendicitus- all these are very dangerous situations. It said he had 80% of his intestines removed. That sounds like a pretty traumatic thing.

My wife is a surgeon and she sweats through a lot of these types of operations. She'd much rather do a hip replacement. She always worries for the patient when it's the bowel (she worries for the patient always- but you know what I mean). So easy to get serious infection when the bowel is involved. She's always a little taken aback when parents bring their wee kids in demanding an operation or acting like an operation is just like pulling a tooth. People want general anesthetic for minor procedures. It's crazy. Some people die from anesthetic alone. It's fairly rare, but it happens.

Surgery's dangerous. Whether you're rich or poor, young or old- I don't believe it serves anybody well to call any surgery "routine" or to assume that the doctors can always fix whatever ails you. I understand these brothers' grief and they'll certainly want to ask questions- but I don't think they do themselves any good by walking into the situation assuming there might have been a cock-up somewhere when their brother had such a serious condition to begin with (and an obstructed bowel is serious).

then if your a rocker you will love this one from the last cd written by Maurice and vocals by him too. Written for his wife.

"Voice In The Wilderness"

It's another woman
Hey, it could be me, it could be anyone
Yeah, she got the energy to blind the sun
And she make me glow
She sparkle and I see the light
I miss her every moment she is out of sight
She's a necessity
My baby keeps rolling me

Watch her glide
This girl is bonafide
She's got what causes chaos

She's got the power that I can't explain
Blowing through each other like a hurricane
Look at me, I'm twenty-seven stories high
There may be somebody else and,

I don't want to live like that
No, I don't want to live like that
Don't want to live like that
No, I don't want to live like that, live like that
Just another voice in the wilderness

Stick with me forever
Cross my heart and hope to die
You should give me everything and so will I
And the world will know
I say I will not lie
You know more lovers than one for some become a necessity
My baby keeps rolling me

Live on stage
Exposing my jealous rage
Life can be complicated

I give you something you can talk about
Love is like a prison and you can't get out
These things are hard to find
You say the world is flat but

I don't want to live like that
No, I don't want to live like that
Don't want to live like that
No, I don't want to live like that, live like that
Just another voice in the wilderness

Walking through the fire
Running like a river 'til the race is won
I'm risking everything to be someone
I will stick by you
We know but we will not fail
Lifting of the spirit and the flesh prevails
And the fight is on
This love, it keeps rolling on

Watch me fly
Into the clear blue sky
This is the age of wonder
I am the one

I don't want to live like that
No, I don't want to live like that
I don't want to live like that, live like that
Just another voice in the wilderness

The doctors try to do the best they can for the sick, and more times than not they do succeed. Not always but I know they try their best.

I think it will take these guys awhile to come to grips with their lost. They were brothers always together since they were born, and one was the twin of the other so I am sure its going to be awhile for the shock to end and the healing to start and I bet the two of them will do it with their music.

Thanks for your post it was a very helpful.

"To Love Somebody", in my opinion, is an all-time classic.

They lost me with SNF.
