[history]
A conservative preacher once told me he thought "a little socialism was good." I was dumbfounded. He did not realize this was tantamount to saying a little evil is good.
In the early 1900s socialism was regarded as a crazy idea invented by revolutionaries and Marxists to disrupt civilization and bring down governments. But today the majority of Americans behave as socialists

The SSA act of 1935. "The Social Security system may be accurately described as a form of social insurance, enacted pursuant to Congress' power to "spend money in aid of the `general welfare,'" Helvering v. Davis, supra, at 640, whereby persons gainfully employed, and those who employ them, are taxed to permit the payment of benefits to the retired and disabled, and their dependents. Plainly the expectation is that many members of the present productive work force will in turn become beneficiaries rather than supporters of the program. But each worker's benefits, though flowing from the contributions he made to the national economy while actively employed, are not dependent on the degree to which he was called upon to support the system by taxation. It is apparent that the noncontractual interest of an employee covered by the Act cannot be soundly analogized to that of the holder of an annuity, whose right to benefits is bottomed on his contractual premium payments." FLEMMING v. NESTOR, 363 U.S. 603(1960)

Ooops. Sorry. I need rest. Way past my bedtime :)
And you're right.... that was just a kooky comment.

He has no point that hasn't been made, ad nauseum, for 40/50 years now. The SS 'system' exists because the political system wanted it. Don't blame those who have fought that system for forty years or more. So let us get outraged and rant a bit and then help us channel our anger into your plan for doing away with the theft. You do have a plan, don't you!? After 40/50 years of this someone has to have come up with something by now.
And so are your grandparents, etc. -- Do you run about at family gatherings calling them thieves?
I'm not very popular at family gatherings. This might have something to do with it. My parents are nearing SS age and are carefully avoiding the subject. I sent them a copy of this article though.

Never an act of Government that you don't like is there, Herr Roscoe?

Apology accepted. I get so sick of so-called "conservatives" exspousing their vision of big government.

But you
are a leech and a looter--by your own standards.
You've just found a way to rationalize your blood-sucking of the American taxpayer.

Of course not. Gubmint is good according to Roscoe.

I get sick of libertarians sucking the teat of big government and complaining about it.

"Don't bogart that teat, my friend . . . pass it over to me"
To: DAnconia55
You just did, - 'belabor' the point:
Odd. I would have imagined that you'd instantly understand and admit that All transfer payments are theft. Including Socialist Security.
Its a given. -- We all know that. There is no need to 'admit' it, unless some twit is trying to belabor the point. Please, tell me you understand the above. -- But if you can't, I give up, and you can have the last word of this really amusing exchange.

This is exactly why I do not believe that women should vote, you can almost mark the nations slide into destruction with women's right to vote.

I get sick of libertarians sucking the teat of big government and complaining about it. Geez, at risk of being labeled a Big "L" Libertarian by all, what the f*ck are you talking about?
Sucking the teat of gov, after you pour in 50% of your wages over your life time.
Are you a moron or do you just play one on the internet?

I think it's a distinction without much difference. If the government controls your property, it isn't private. I just found it interesting to see how the left was/is able to re-define the debate by subtle, and not so subtle, language shifts: liberal>conservative, anti-communism>McCarthyism, patriotism>jingoism, etc.
To: MissAmericanPie
The women voting issue and the non-land owner voting issue are pretty big.
I was not around when these decisions were made, so I lack the first person experience. It seems to me these two issues introduced unneeded emotion and self-interest into the equation.
We are not the country our founders envisioned.

"The Social Security system may be accurately described as a form of social insurance, enacted pursuant to Congress' power to "spend money in aid of the `general welfare,'" Does that power appear in the same Constitution as "the right to keep and bear arms for hunting and sporting purposes"?

Never an act of Government You disagree with the court's conclusion that there is no contractual right to social security benefits? I don't suppose you could manage to explain why.
