To the first sentence: Is it standard procedure to cover suspected, possibly armed robbers with a can of mace?
To the second: must be nice, in a way, to know so much with so little firsthand info.

"would you swerve into a child into order to avoid hitting the dog" I think most of these people would do just that.
But if it had been my dog, I would have cried and then comforted the cop and told him not to feel guilty.
Unbelieveable, there is still someone who cares about man and not just his furry friend.

I figured ahead of time we weren't going to agree on this one. Sorry to have hurt your feelings. I should have been clearer.

Cops have degenerated from your ideal view of them, much in the way that public school teachers and administrators have. Dumbed down education, the wrong incentives, and too little attention to constitutional basics - it's the same for every function of government except the military, which still, in some measure, keeps to a traditional code and where the sharp end is still thankfully pointed away from citizens (Waco excepted).
Overtime pay, fines, siezures, and risk avoidance are the hallmarks of modern policing. The priority targets are those that plainly cannot resist, and the thuggery was vivid and clear in the video. NONE of the apologists for the police have said one word about how to improve policing. NOT ONE WORD IN THE WHOLE THREAD. To them, policing is perfect the way it is (except for higher pay!). Gee, you gotta wonder if maybe their family income is somehow connected.
The REAL image of policing is one of declining solution rates for murder and rape, ridiculously bad performance solving any property crime, spiraling costs, inefficient use of human resources, featherbedding, corruption, personal problems that range from astronomical divorce rates and alcoholism rates, and, of course, the blue wall of silence.
In other words, police are not effective at producing results that middle class conservatives find valuable, and their performance is in decline. They are enthusiastic about constitutionally dubious laws because they generate revenue. They are hideously expensive. And they think there is not a damn thing wrong with them. No wonder they cannot figure out why a CONSERVATIVE forum rips thier performance.

"...who would be at fault? " You Terriergal would be! You carelessly left your wallet on top of BibChr's car. Causing a stream of money to fly out littering the highway and prompting a concerned citizen to call the police on the unsuspecting BibChr family. Thus when the resulting felony stop of the BibChr family results in the death of the young BibChr poodle, TerrierGal, the dog's blood is on your hands.

To the first sentence: Is it standard procedure to cover suspected, possibly armed robbers with a can of mace? And where is the "EVIDENCE" that these "ARE" the armed robbers?
To: FreePaul
Aiming and firing a shotgun is not a "mistake". It is a deliberate act which the shooter initiates. The "mistake" may be in judgement, temperment or thought processes of the shooter. For this the shooter should suffer the consequences and they should be severe.I think Officer Eric Hall is taking all the heat when the really big mistake was made by the THP dispatcher who issued an all-points-bulletin for a robbery suspect based on an anonymous cell-phone call reporting money flying out of a car. Nobody witnessed a robery, but a dispatcher reports the description of a robbery suspect. The high-stress felony stop scenerio was wrongly initiated by the THP dispatcher!
IMO, another big mistake is that the senior THP trooper failed to remain properly in charge at the scene. The trooper wandering around with a flashlight (probably the Lt.) clearly could have closed the door.
If you look at the all video and read all the stories at NewsChannel5.Com - Nashville, Tennessee maybe you will conclude, like me, that Officer Eric Hall is taking all the heat for mistakes by the THP. Three seconds isn't a whole lot of time size up the dog's intentions.
To: BibChr
Officer Hall said he thought a
Pitbull was attacking him.
He also said the dog singled him out for attack, circling him in an aggressive manner and growling in a threateningly.
This is from his initial interview with one of the local papers.
Officer Hall, as well as the THP officers, will likely be be cross examined under oath during the litigation process which is just getting uderway. We'll see how much of his original statement holds up.

"A dog, I believe to be a pit-bull, jumped from the suspect vehicle, singled me out from the other officers, and charged toward me growling in an aggressive manner, Hall described." Do we have a whole nation who are literally scared to death of any dog that even resembles a Pit Bull?
This is getting totally whacky.
A nation of effing p*ssies. Beam me up, Scotty.

The dispatcher should be punished, as well as the sadistic, pet murdering cop.I strongly agree that the dispatcher should be punished. I disagree with your characterization of Officer Hall.
To: Ken H
Should be "growling in a threatening manner."

Why are you defending this punk's actions?
In three seconds he decided his life was in danger and the only option was to kill a family pet.
Let us not forget, he was surrounded by four of his buddies, the bad guys were handcuffed and kneeling on the pavement, and they had been asked to close the door so said dog couldn't jump out.
If you are LEO, you should want people like this expunged from your ranks.
Where are you coming from?

Right. And the video, as I watched and re-watched, at least
could back that up.
But we weren't there.

From WKRN.com Nashville
Stop Calling E. Hall In light of the dog shooting tape released this week, many people have called Cookeville trying to find officer Eric Hall. The officer's number is not listed, but an 86-year-old great-grandmother with the initials E. Hall is in the book. And, as Andy Cordan reported, she's had enough.Way to go people, in your anger towards officer Hall, you have terrorized an 86 year old woman who is now "afraid of her phone". Nice going.

"...maybe you will conclude, like me, that Officer Eric Hall is taking all the heat for mistakes by the THP"I think he is taking the heat for every gripe and fear these people have had with government since they were born.
They are railroading him in a merciless frenzy of lynch mob mentality, that makes Officer Hall look like the model of restraint.

Why are you defending this punk's actions?Because when I watch and read the complete reporting by the local news media in Nashville, TN I don't see a vicious, monster, "punk" in Officer Hall.
If you are LEO, you should want people like this expunged from your ranks.
I'm an engineer and as I posted earlier, I have no family in any way connected with law enforment and I'm not a FReeper.
Where are you coming from?
I am convinced that nationally televised video supposedly showing police engaged in brutality is always interpretted by the "huddled masses" in an emotional way, rather than a rational way.
