Hundreds die from the cold
Wed, Jan. 08, 2003 9:18 AM ET

By the Associated Press

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) Nearly 400 people have died of cold in Bangladesh and northern India in the past 10 days as temperatures plummeted and cold winds swept in from the Himalayas, officials and news reports said Wednesday.

The cold sweeping across northern Bangladesh caused 60 deaths this week, raising the toll to 260, media reports said.

Temperatures dipped into the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit - dangerous levels in impoverished India and Bangladesh, where millions of people live without heat, electricity and warm clothing.

At least 24 people died Tuesday night in India's Uttar Pradesh state, pushing the death toll there to 128, Home Ministry officials said in Lucknow, the state's capital.

Schools in the state have been ordered closed until Monday.

In India's eastern Bihar state, 11 people have died due to cold, officials said. Newspapers, however, said at least 80 people had died.

The latest deaths in Bangladesh occurred Monday and Tuesday in the northern districts of Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Pabna and Rajshahi, where the temperature dropped to 48 degrees Fahrenheit, Dhaka's Janakantha newspaper reported.

Most of the dead were children and elderly villagers who lived in mud-and-straw huts and could not afford warm clothing. At least 200 children have been hospitalized with fever.

Bangladesh government officials confirmed there had been deaths from the cold, but declined to give any figures.

Officials in India's Uttar Pradesh state said their death toll was only compiled from urban districts, and did not include remote rural areas.

"Nobody is looking at the villages where the cold is even more intense because of open fields," said Sukhram Pandey, a Lucknow doctor.

The coldest temperatures were in Lucknow, where the mercury dipped to 38 degrees Fahrenheit, said weather official A.K. Verma.

District authorities in the worst hit areas of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states have ordered public bonfires to be lit and allowed the use of schools and government buildings as shelters for the homeless.

The cold temperatures have also brought dense fog, which reduced visibility on the roads in Lucknow to a few yards. Flights were canceled and trains were running five to eight hours late. Hundreds of stranded passengers were huddled on the platforms at the city's central railway station.

In Bangladesh, the weather office said it would remain cold and foggy for another week. Long distance bus and ferry services were disrupted as fog blanketed highways and rivers across the delta nation.

Well, it's warmer here in Wisconsin right now than in Lucknow. 45 degrees there; 48 here. El Niño strikes again!

Can you imagine the chaos over there as everyone tries frantically to keep warm. Cold? What's that? Blankets? Jackets? Ditto.

No one ... calling for Elmer and Petunia is an old Boy Scout camping tradition. And Yes I am a happy Clamper.

The one thing better than being a Humbug (Grand Poobah) is being an x-Humbug ... How do you know of Clampers ????

Ah. I mentioned it to another Freeper on an APOD thread a while back. Anyway, my cousin tagged me with the nick back about 1970 or so - yes he (and my brother) were in the Scouts. This was in Southern California. My brother refused the "Elmer" nick, though.

IIRC, we discussed Clamper stuff way back when. Remember, I mentioned the "Pair O' Dice" Chapter 7-11? Used to work up in Magalia/Paradise Pines, and met a LOT of them. Also I said that Clampers consumed more adult beverages than the Shriners. You said 'Yes, much much more.'.

We don't live in California anymore; if we did, I would be tickled if poorman was invited to the ECV brotherhood. He's a card.

Somebody needs to start keeping a "people killed by the earth being too cold" vs. "people killed by the earth being too warm" scorecard. The OISM folks have been saying for a long time that global warming would decrease human suffering.

so much for global warming

Think how many lives in India could have been saved, if only more people in America were driving SUVs!

Liberals blame conservatives for wanting to kill school children with polluted water. We need to blame them for causing people to freeze to death in India, because of their opposition to global warming.

Warm here, cold there. Same temps, different climate. There it's a cold wave, a freak thing. Here it's record warmth for January.

It all evens out over distance and time. No warming.

I've got CRS too. I'd watch that old pervert and reformed pinko commie guy 1redshirt. I hear he has a predilection for barnyard animals ...

BTW I was his sponser into the Clampers. His wife and I have some pretty heated discussions. She's WAY left of Lenin.

I had to scrape ice from my car this morning!

To understand how horrible an experience that is, it is important to know I live near in the Tampa Bay area.No gloves, and the car heater does not work!

Obviously no where near as horrible as people dying from cold weather, but we have had a rash of fires from people using cheap electric heaters to try and keep warm.

El Nino strikes again.

I DIDN'T have to scrape ice off the car windshield this morning!

To understand how horrible an experience that is, it is important to know that I live near Green Bay, WI. My gloves are gathering dust, and the car heater is sitting unused!

Obviously not as bad as frost in Tampa, but the snowmobile sales here are way down, and all the winter festivals in Wisconsin and Minnesota have been canceled due to lack of snow - and it's too warm to MAKE snow!

It's ridiculous - it's still 48 degrees here. I had to go around in shirt sleeves - just too warm for a sweater.

Oh, the humanity!

Pssst, look at that weather map today, see all the blue? It's coming on down tonight!

Yeah, I saw that the big freeze is incoming tomorrow. Maybe it'll be in the low teens 24 hours from now.

Did you notice the California flag on my profile page? I was born and raised in SoCal. Wisconsin weather is still a novelty for me.
