Meanwhile, the NEA's annual budget is well more than $300 million, 10 times that of the entire AFL-CIO. Its membership, roughly 2.2 million, is second only to the Teamsters.

The NEA has become so influential in American society that it has become worthy of regulation in the manner of utilities, the stock market and other unions. The Taft-Hartly Act was passed in the same vain to temper the power of unions.

The NEA, and its elite socialist agenda, is not conducive to the Democrats "progressive" social agenda for the blue collar constituents that the Democrats claim to champion. The NEA is bad for the Democrats and worse for America. Its only purpose is to advance the interests of its own "Nomenclatura", as the article insinuates.

When I was young (late nineteen fifies), my father told me that "communists" were infiltrating our education system. I suppose many would laugh at that. But I also suppose the goal would be to hurt our education system and our country. Is that not what the NEA and its followers have done and are doing? Why aren't these people in jail?

During the 1998 election cycle, NEA spent $1,853,390 in direct contributions. Most of these were in $10,000 chunks to House Democrats..."

This Week's News: Members File Class Action Suit Against NEA Members Insurance Trust

Internal NEA sources tell EIA that a class action lawsuit has been filed against the union and the insurance arm of its Member Benefits Corporation for failing to distribute a $17.3 million windfall to members who participated in the members-only insurance plan.

NEA offers perks through its Member Benefits Corporation that include credit cards, banking and mortgage services, and insurance. In December 2001, NEA held a group life insurance policy on behalf of some 400,000 members with the Prudential Insurance Company. That month, Prudential converted to a stockholders’ company, a process known as demutualization. It distributed shares of stock to all its policyholders, including some 600,000 shares to NEA that were valued at $17.3 million.

The lawsuit arose from the fact that NEA itself holds the policy, not the individual members who participate. The union therefore felt justified in keeping the Prudential stock proceeds for the Members Insurance Trust itself rather than go through the cumbersome process of distributing payments of less than $40 to each of the member participants. An unidentified member, on behalf of a class of all participants in the NEA insurance program as of December 2001, filed suit in U.S. District Court, seeking distribution of the money to the members.

The National Education Association (NEA), just prior to the anniversary of the horror of the Twin Towers attack, urged its members in a directive not to lay blame on Islamic terrorists but instead to lecture students on America's sins.

The horror has just been surpassed by the NEA.

In ideology, the Frankfurt School eschewed the economic aspects of Marxism and promulgated a substitute based on Marx's 1843 preachments. Later labeled neo-Marxism, the program called for the destruction of religion, the family, education and all moral values, along with the capture of the intellectuals and the instruments of mass communication such as press, radio and films. To this it appended a new Freudianism, which reduced human relationships to rampant sexuality and the grossest pleasure principles -- a program its secret founder boasted "will make America stink."

A paragraph of nonsense! This guy offers himself as an example of the failure of American Education! Marx's Economic and Philophical Manuscripts, the "preachments" to which he refers, were written in 1844. Not an accurate description of the Frankfurt School anyway. What are "the grossest pleasure principles?" If he doesn't approve of Freud, then why use one of his phrases, unintelligably at that, to critize him? After we get rid of the NEA can we also do away with journalists who dabble in philosophy and critical theory?

In 1978 or so my wife and I came to know a young woman named Patty. She was a devoutly religious young mother who'd become more devout when her husband and father of her two small sons aged 2 and 6 informed her that he was leaving. In dire economic straits, I offered to let her stay in our former home in Chamblee -- which was not rented at the time – rent-free until she got back on her feet. She had been clandestinely home schooling the 6 year old for about 2 years using very well done Christian course materials from an organization in Texas the name of which escapes me. The lad had recently been tested and had placed at least a year ABOVE his chronological age. As required by the government school authorities at the time, she dutifully apprised the authorities of his scores.

For reasons which would become clear in a moment, Patty had been harassed by the DeKalb County school authorities for about 6 months and, by the time she moved into the Chamblee house, had been -- unbeknownst to us -- ORDERED to put the 6 year old into the nearest government elementary school or suffer the consequences. Because she wanted the boys to be educated Christians, there was no way she was going to do that and she told them so.

At approximately 2 am one morning, a loud knock on the door announced the arrival of the aforementioned "consequences." Dressed only in a nightgown, she was confronted by several burly police officers who thrust an arrest warrant in her face. With the now awakened 6 year old watching and the 2 year old wailing in the other room, she was handcuffed and led out the door to jail. She was tossed into a large cell with a couple of hookers and a junkie who spent much of the rest of that morning vomiting in the corner. The two young boys for whom the educational authorities professed such great concern were just left AT THE HOUSE -- ALONE! Patty was later told that the bureaucrats from Children Services who were SUPPOSED to accompany the cops were late and, in their haste to get this dangerous miscreant behind bars, the cops just missed the fact that the Children Services people were, well, missing. The CS folks showed up an hour later to find two terrified kids, one of whom had just seen his mother hauled off in cuffs.

Patty was ultimately brought to trial under the Georgia Truancy Statutes. Her pro-bono attorney tore the school authorities to shreds and hers has been called THE case that opened the floodgates to home schooling in Georgia. Once they had all the facts, the jury didn’t take long to acquit her. I’m proud to have played a small part in that.

At Patty’s trial, a previously overlooked aspect of the government schools was put into sharp focus for those paying attention: The Director of Instruction for DeKalb County testified that the then current 7 hour school day consisted of an average of approximately 3 hours or less of instruction. At that time, Patty was devoting 4 to 5 hours a day to direct instruction.

He also as much as admitted that the REAL reason they wanted ALL these kids in school was the $3,000.00 per kid per year they then got from the state and federal government. Empty seats = lost funds. As in most things, follow the money. Patty home schooled these two boys through high school.

And how did the boys turn out?

One is now a physician and the other a budding journalist.

But that now seems to be the norm for the growing legions of home schooled kids – which most likely explains why the NEA and the government school folks feel so threatened. Home schooled kids are kicking butt in every category all over the nation.

Thomas Jefferson believed an EDUCATED PUBLIC to be the cornerstone of the system he and the other Founders TRIED to leave behind. He would NOT, I feel certain, be a big fan of the current government education system. If he returned today, he’d home school -- just as he did before.
