Donahue: Clinton Encounter Left Me Rattled

MSNBC TV talker Phil Donahue bristled Tuesday at charges that he went soft on a 1999 rape allegation against Bill Clinton, explaining that an interview with the ex-president seven years earlier had left him so rattled he worried about his family.

"You know, you're talking to a guy who's got the finger from Bill Clinton for raising Gennifer Flowers on my television show. I did not give Clinton a pass," Donahue told nationally syndicated radio host Sean Hannity, who pressed him on Sexgate allegations by Kathleen Willey and Juanita Broaddrick.

"And I was booed by my own audience," Donahue insisted. "And I continued to question him about Gennifer Flowers - an issue at the time that he was denying."

But the one-time king of daytime TV talk complained that Clinton tried to intimidate him during the 1992 broadcast, telling Hannity, "He looked at me and he gave me that pointed finger. You remember when he said, 'I did not have sex...' He looked at me and he said, 'You're the reason for the cynicism in this country, Phil.'"

Donahue said he was worried about the impact the Clinton altercation might have on his family.

"My mother was watching from her apartment in Cleveland," he explained. "I've got a family and two dogs. I mean, that's a tough drill to take.

"So, don't say that I am just blindly surrendering," he told Hannity.

The Donahue-Hannity exchange went like this:

HANNITY: The guy you are defending - I've interviewed Kathleen Willey. She's a woman - you're a liberal, Phil. (And she's) on record saying that he groped me and grabbed me.

DONAHUE: Yes, and she called the president afterwards. She called the president after the incident and wanted to know if she could have a job with him.

HANNITY: She had no money, Phil. And what about Paula Jones? And what about the rape accusation by Juanita Broaddrick?

DONAHUE: You know, you're talking to a guy who's got the finger from Bill Clinton for raising Gennifer Flowers on my television show. I did not give Clinton a pass. And I said during the very first campaign that if the polls show that if the Americans care about the character issue in a presidential campaign, then the media has a responsibility to chase these issues. And I did. And I was booed by my own audience. And I continued to question him about Gennifer Flowers - an issue at the time that he was denying.

And he looked at me and he gave me that pointed finger. You remember when he said, "I did not have sex..." He looked at me and he said, "You're the reason for the cynicism in this country, Phil." My mother was watching from her apartment in Cleveland. You know, I've got a family and two dogs. I mean, that's a tough drill to take. So, don't say that I am just blindly surrendering. So, what did Phil think clinton would do, have him bumped off.

Oh.

Nevermind.

Who cares what this old has-been says anymore? Obviously, nobody watches his set-up show.

Dear Sean: Please stop putting these ranting libs on your radio program. If I want to listen to libs, I can listen to any other radio station on the dial.

feminists seem to like men like bill clinton, and grey davis.

the ken and john show in los angeles reported several times that grey davis had physically shoved a female aide into the wall, injuring her.

she was told not to pursue the matter because "he'll ruin you".

so, she got the state of california to remove her to another office.

Now Phil wouldn't want to sound paranoid like us 'right wing-nuts' he and his bud Al Franken so often malign.....

I agree with you but it is nice to hear that clinton really did intimidate people in the media. Good news to get out there. The fact that Phil Donahue feared for his family sends an important message...not that we will ever hear this on CNN, of course.

I heard this exchange on the radio and then Donohue really started to lose it with Sean. He started shouting and wasn't making any sense. I think Phil needs to retire and go back to taking his meds. Talk about a has-been.

Sorry, Phil, you chose to defend Clinton and now you cannot have it both ways.

Freepers, I think this is the beginning of a rash of defections from the Clintonista Camp. As the Bent One's political cache diminishes, those who previously felt threatened by the Dixie Mafia will be denying their past allegiances in the coming Conservative Era. This should be entertaining.

DonaWHO's nothing but a skirt-wearing pantywaist.

Paul Sperry is journalist who physically went toe-to-toe with Clintoon -- on the White House' South Lawn, no less!

See #8 and #9 above. I don't believe Phil for a minute...especially when he raises his voice. Remember, there's no such thing as an honest liberal.

I actually think Donahue is unstable. He seems to have little control over his emotions. I can watch his show for about 2 minutes before I have to turn it off. Of course, Chris Matthews affects me the same way. Did you know that Donahue and Matthews have the lowest rated shows on MSNBC? I sure can see why. The truth is, the majority of the country is sick of listening to constant, never-ending Bush-bashing..and never-ending liberal bias. It just doesn't play all that well anymore.

Agree in spades. Today Sean said Michael Moore was a discredited person, so he would "ask him on the show to let him explain." HUH???? Now Michael Savage informs his listeners about the race hustler Al Sharpton's involvement with the Tawana Brawley FRAUD, and you can be certain he won't invite that slimy b*tt on his show to "explain." I respect that! Giving slimy people media time is to promote them and give them legitimacy - pure and simple.

I agree. He is unstable and he should never have come out of retirement. On the other hand, though, he makes us look good. LOL!

Donahue is so out-of-touch that even Matthews accused him of being anti-American one night. It was a hoot. I did manage to stay tuned for that little conversation. They ended up rather angry with each other right on-camera. Matthews was a guest on Donahue's show. It was pretty funny because I think Matthews is pretty anti-America sometimes, too.

If Phil was "rattled" by Clinton, it probably was in the sense that he found x42 so dreamy and wonderful that for a moment he considered going gay. Then he remembered that Marlo would snatch his head and hide it if he did anything to make her mad, so he reconsidered.

Yup, Matthews still has a show. Fortunately, his ratings are .4, with Donahue at .3.
