(IsraelNN.com) Close aides to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon are accusing opponents of spreading lies in an effort to takedown the prime minister ahead of the national election with a smear campaign.

Campaign manager Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert explained that the opponents are unable to beat Sharon in the polls, so they are resorting to the planting or false stories of alleged campaign fraud.

Sharon's sons insist they have nothing to fear; adding they have documentation proving the transaction involving a $1.5 million loan from a South African philanthropist was above board.

Responding to the accusation from the Sharon camp, Ha'aretz newspaper officials stated they stand behind the report, adding they have an official Justice Ministry document – a correspondence with South African law enforcement officials. Israel is calling on South Africa to assist in finding out how $1.5 million dollars were transferred from a South African bank to an Israeli bank without officials realizing what was taking place.
