(Newark-WABC, January 6, 2003) — New Jersey has long been criticized for its DMV and today it nearly suffered its most visable black eye, as a suspect is busted for making fake ID's for illegal immigrants in the Newark DMV parking lot. Anthony Johnson reports.

One man has been taking into custody after authorities say they found a number of fraudulent documents in his car. Eyewitness News is told the person who is now under arrest was not an employee of the division of motor vehicles. This was a DMV and New Jersey State Police joint investigation and together they found their suspect.

The arrest happened this morning at the Newark Division of Motor Vehicle Office. Apparently, the man drove illegal immigrants to this office and provided them with all the documentation they would need to get a New Jersey Driver's license. But he sold these documents at a very hefty price. He sold the documents for $1,500 to $2,000 dollars.

Authorities say they noticed that a car repeatedly pulled into this lot to drop folks to pick up a license.

Tom Wright, New Jersey DMV: "This car showed up here consistently, so the state police staked out the parking lot this morning and when the car came in and stopped him."

The fraudulent documents include social security cards, immigration and naturalization documents along with Puerto Rican birth certificates. Authorities say they also discovered cash inside of the car and narcotics as well. The driver of the car also allegedly had false documents and police were able to catch up to this person because an individual who had his ID stolen called police let them know.

So far, no charges have been filed and one man is under arrest.

"But he sold these documents at a very hefty price. He sold the documents for $1,500 to $2,000 dollars."

My perception of an illegal alien is that of someone looking for work in this country who doesn't have much... if that perception is valid someone is clearly financing these persons or the funds are being arrived at illegally...

Second... As a NY'er I've had trouble arising out of the NJ DMV just recently. They apparently are a gateway for cars to be re-registered after theft and/or collision. Consumers are not adequately protected as NJ doesn't (or at least in my case did not) take steps normally taken here in NYS for registration and title of a vehicle.
