Satirist Moore Storms Out of Britain
Internet Movie Database ^ | January 7, 2003

American satirist Michael Moore has stormed out of Britain after a bust up with the London theatre hosting his one-man show. The Bowling For Columbine moviemaker performed Michael Moore - Live! to packed audiences for two months before Christmas at The Roundhouse in Camden, North London. But on the penultimate night he reportedly flew into a rage, verbally attacked everyone associated with the theatre because he thought he wasn't being paid enough. During the performance he complained he was making just $750 a night. A member of the stage crew says, "He completely lost the plot. He stormed around all day screaming at everyone, even the £5-an-hour bar staff, telling them how we were all conmen and useless. Then he went on stage and did it in public." Staff retaliated by refusing to work the following night, which led to the show being held up for an hour. Eventually he made a groveling apology to staff and the angry audience finally took to their seats. A source reports that Moore then packed his bags and flew to New York the next day without saying thank you or goodbye to anyone.

Under stress situations Moore's real persona comes out. He's an elitist and snob.

Michael Moore confounds anti-corporate conventional wisdom ("Small businesspeople are rednecks.")

Tuesday night, March 5 Michael Moore appeared before a full house Arcata Van Duzer Theater at Humboldt State University. Moore, the famous filmmaker and political activist, talked about his new book, about "President" (a term he used with finger quotes) Bush and about how Arcata people might spread political activism.

Motivation, he said, is key, with discontent providing that motivation. "I'm so pissed off," Moore said, inspiring cheers. Moore encouraged everyone who who shared that feeling to combat oppression. "Don't just stay in Arcata and eat your granola, your gluten-free granola," he admonished the assembly.

Moore quickly made clear that he doesn't share some of the alternative culture doctrine held dear by many Arcatans. Asked about recycling, Moore said, "Recycling creates an illusion of saving the planet." He said he disapproves of simply recycling without knowing where recycleables go - they might be sent to a Third World country where people work under sweatshop conditions.

Asked about Arcata's pending cap on pattern restaurant expansion, Moore - widely recognized as a corporate antagonist - again confounded expectations. "Where will you eat?" he asked. "Can't you have at least one Jamba Juice?"

Moore said that the news media try to make people think that they are a small minority when they want to dissent from mainstream America. But, according to Moore, dissenters aren't the minority.

On request, Moore immediately endorsed Green Party candidate for State Assembly Doug Riley-Thron. "He first handed me a $20 bill, then he gave me another one, and another one," Riley-Thron said later. "Then he said ‘Here, take it all,' and he handed me a bunch of ones." The total take: $80. (more Moore at the link....)

Right on. In other words, he is a typical limousine liberal. He demands that the little people buckle down and be good little conservationist peasants while he has the right to lead a wild hedonistic lifestyle of excess.

They say that no man is an island.

It's true. Michael is a planet with a separate moon orbiting his large ass.

A CurtainUp London Review
Michael Moore Live!
by Brian Clover

Would I do this show in the States? Hell no! -- Michael Moore

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nov. 13: To Camden Towne to hear the famed Preecher Mr Michael MOORE late arrived on these shores from His Majestye's colony in N. America. On my way there no fewer than five men loomed out from the shadows and whispered to me 'Mary Warner'. Perceeving by this that some poore child of the parish were lost and missing, my heart was moved but I hastened on by to ye Roundhouse.

Thus I was in time to hear all Preecher MOORE's most vigorous sermon. This MOORE is a fearsome bear of a man most strangely attired in the native N. American costume of bluedgenes and baise-paul cap. He preeches mightily and threatens us with images of HELL. To whit, he conjures up a dreadful apocalyptic future where his countrymen have cast off their allegiance to their rightfull king, declared themselves a Re-Public and hold the world to ransom with their flying machines, soft shoes, and sugared water drinks! While plainly absurd, such notions still terrify. Can such things be? Yes! says MOORE, If ye sin, they shall be! He then amuses us and we all become salvation-seeking putty in his enormous hands. Like many others gathered there, I confess my sins and resolve to live a better life. On the return journey the poore fellowes are still crying out for their Mary Warner. Mindful of Preecher Moore's urgings to lead a better life I halt and address them thus: "My Fellowes, listen well to what I shall do. I shall hie me to the nearest police station and tell them of your Mary Warner. They will come here, they will make a thorough search and, have no doubt, THEY WILL FIND YOUR MARY WARNER!"

To my amazement, instead of thanking me the ingrates cursed and fell upon me, beating me senseless for my pains. Truly this is a wicked world!

Poor old Sam was right. Michael Moore's One and a Half Man Show is the work of a barnstorming evangelical preacher. The wonderfully atmospheric Roundhouse is hung with huge portraits of world leaders, but young and smiling to remind us of what they were in more innocent days. Moore gives us his view of what happened to them when he comes on stage.

Nervous at first, he soon hits his stride and his big theme, which is the politics of fear. Ironically, Moore himself uses fear, as well as anger, pity and laughter to convince us of his take on modern America. He is a radical and this is a radical view which many will disagree with. But Moore is a big man in more ways than one. He wants to make a difference and he wants to debate. He gives the audience the opportunity to challenge him at the end. They do. And he responds.

Along the way we are also treated to fun and games and these don't always work: phoning Kuwait's McDonalds in search of Osama bin Laden is neither funny nor revealing. "Stump the Yank", a game designed to prove the dumbest Brit is smarter than the cleverest American, also misfires. But when he phones Washington's enquiries operator and she cannot find the number of Office of Homeland Security you feel, well, just a little spooked.

But whether you agree with him or not, Moore's set pieces are impressive by any standard. His routine on airport security is as funny as one by Jerry Seinfeld, but it has a chilling edge. In the second half he makes us laugh with his lazy-boy Garrison Keillor-style high school reminiscences, but then quietly shifts gear into a dark and passionate meditation on the September 11th hijack victims. This moves everyone to the edge of their seat but Moore skilfully brings us down again by flourishing his British List of Lies - "Fresh Vegetables?" "NO THEY'RE NOT!" - "You need a college degree." "NO YOU DON'T!"

When finally he persuades many in the audience to stand up and shred their supermarket loyalty cards you can't help thinking of Billy Graham, or some other evangelist, working a crowd. Moore's aims are different but his technique is not so different. You may not go for his politics, but it is impossible not to admire his skills as an orator. The art of preaching is not dead.

Editor's Note: For those unable to catch Moore live, there's always Bowling For Columbine. I recently saw and liked it (well, mostly) in my neighborhood multiplex. ---e.s.

I write topical humor for radio for a living, and in my expert opinion, Michael Moore is no satirist. Satirists tell the truth in a humorous way, and Moore dispenses lies in an angry, boring, unfunny way. I've seen him do some amusing things, back in the old "TV Nation" days, but nothing he's put out in the past decade deserves the title of "honest satire." He's not a satirist, he's just a self-satisfied propagandist.

It's also ludricrous to call "Bowling for Columbine" the best documentary ever made because it isn't even a documentary. Back when I got my film degree, we were taught that a documentary could take a strong point of view, but it could not falsify archive footage or create staged scenes and pass them off as real. Moore does both. Again, the proper term for what he is doing is not "documentary," but "propaganda."

His show was heavily advertised - in London you don't heavily advertise a show unless you're having a genuine problem getting people to see it. Chicago (the musical) sells out with only a few posters here and there. You could tell the present run of My Fair Lady was in trouble when there was an advertising blitz. And so on.

I'm glad he's getting out of here.

Regards, Ivan

Yeah, Michael Moore's soooooooooo worried about the plight of the common man... Reminds me of the study that showed liberals don't tip. It seems their concern for the working poor only extends to the theoretical poor person. And their desire to "give" only extends to using other peoples money. Liberals are a rather creepy group. This is just one more example.

Satirist? Jonathan Swift was a satirist, Michael Moore is no Jonathan Swift.

Amen to that. You beat me to posting that point.
