Arrest made in Copperas Cove girl's abduction
01/06/2003
COPPERAS COVE, Texas - A 17-year-old girl who officials said was abducted Sunday morning from her mother's home was released unharmed by her abductor hours later about 30 miles away.
An Amber Alert had been issued for Emerald Marie Porter.
She had cuts and bruises on her face when she disappeared. Tela Mange, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said Porter was OK when she was released.
Mange said Porter was released by her abductor on Fort Hood property near Lake Belton, about 30 miles north of Copperas Cove, which is about 60 miles north of Austin.
Mange said Porter then drove her mother's car, which had been stolen in the abduction, back to Copperas Cove and contacted police there about 6 p.m.
Officials said Porter was abducted by her 21-year-old former boyfriend Jeryl Patrick Graves, Jr. Graves was arrested by Killeen police about 9 p.m., Mange said.
Mange said Porter was abducted about 9:30 a.m. after Graves entered the Copperas Cove residence with a rifle and assaulted Porter's mother.
The Copperas Cove Police Department issued the alert, along with the DPS. Mange said the Amber Alert could not be credited with Porter being found.
I'm now taking bets on when the first news source re-writes the above sentence to read "entered the residence with an assault rifle."
