Former state Rep. Ed Case defeated fellow Democrat Matt Matsunaga in a winner-take-all special election to fill the two-year term of the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.

Case received 33,002 votes, or 43 percent of the vote, to 23,050 votes for former Sen. Matsunaga for the 2nd Congressional District seat. Sen. Colleen Hanabusa, also a Democrat, came in third with 6,046 votes.

Republican state Rep. Barbara Marumoto came in fourth with 4,497 votes.

Mink died Sept. 28, just after winning the primary on Sept. 21. Mink posthumously won re-election on Nov. 5.

Another special election, held Nov. 30, was to fill the five weeks remaining in her current term. That election, won by Democrat Ed Case, attracted a turnout of only about 13 percent of the 347,922 voters in the district, which covers Leeward, Windward and North Shore Oahu and the neighbor islands.

What a pathetically low turnout! I still think she was long dead well before the first election deadline and they could have avoided all this effort and expense.

You can be sure that AOL has bought/rented a lot of seats in congress. This one they probably got cheap.

The GOP blew it big time in this race, not bothering to clear the field for one candidate. Shocking that State Rep. Barbara Marumoto came in ahead of Bob McDermott, or that no GOPer managed to crack 10% of the vote. Shameful. The GOP should be running Asian/Pacific Islanders for the House seats, especially since for the first time since pre-statehood, 2 Haoles occupy both House seats.

Non-partisan. After reviewing candidate info, most of those were leftist kooks who made Patsy Mink look like Jesse Helms.

Right. The minimum vote attainable should be four. The candidate. His wife. His dog. His mistress. Wonder who welshed?

It always shocks me what a Japanese American loses a political race in Hawaii to one who isn't. :)

I could say what I think of McDermott, but I think I annoyed you enough last year, and I trying to turn over a new leaf, at least for a week of two.

What's your beef with McDermott ? He struck me as a class act for staying out of that absurd November special in favor of the widower, John Mink. That being said, we should be running non-Haoles for HA Congressional seats. Quentin Kawananakoa ought be sitting in Abercrombie's seat. Barbara Marumoto needs to be the GOP nominee next time around, especially if a brutal Democrat primary breaks out next year between Case and Matsunaga. She can ride a wave into office like Pat Saiki did in 1990. This seat apparently is now more GOP than the 1st was then.
