Police say only two locations will issue gun permits in 2003 [Connecticut]

(New Britain-AP, Jan. 4, 2003 7:00 PM) _ State police say only two places in the state will issue gun permits and permit renewals this year.

A state police spokesman says three locations where permits were processed are closing to save money.

The two locations accepting applicants for gun permits are the Department of Public Safety Headquarters in Middletown and the state police barracks in Bridgeport.

The towns losing their application offices include Tolland, Litchfield and Montville.

The state currently requires people who want a gun license to first obtain a temporary permit from their local police department.

Then applicants must attend gun safety classes, present identification and proof of state residency and submit to fingerprinting and criminal background checks.

Well, that's an interesting way to deal with their little problem of the Constitution.... "Of course you can have a gun, just report to the police station for a permit" and then close down all the stations you can get it at... it's legal though.

In Texas we have ONE office, you mail your application and completed qualification in. 45 days later, you get your plastic.

Economical, effective, and yeah it stinks that I need plastic to exercise my natural right to self-defense. Oh well, the requirements aren't that onerous and the state "shall issue", so it's not all bad. :)

Not really, from the Connecticut state constitution.

"Every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state." Article 1, Section 15.

Yet somehow the whores on their state supreme court think that a right can be subject to state "eligibility certificute" (to purchase a handgun) or license/permit (to carry a handgun). But whatever they think, it's not "legal" since the state constitution is the supreme law of the state. All this setting aside questions of the US Constitution's 2nd amendment's applicability to the states.

That is how the Federal Government deals with restoring gun rights to someone convicted of any crime. The law says that you can appeal for restoration of your rights but the Congress has denied the use of any funds to administer the hearings.

While they may be closing some of the offices where permits are issued, once one has passed the safety course the permits are routinely issued and there is a right of appeal to the state board. Connecticut is not that big a state where these offices are more than an hour and a half drive for anyone. It actually usually takes longer to renew one;'s drivers liscense.

There is no legitimate government in the state of Connecticut. They are nothing but a group of thugs and the State Police are their enforcers.

I'm sorry but you are incorrect, you can renew your drivers license at many non governmental institutions throughout the state. It took me about ten minutes at a local bank.

Does it bother you that the bureaucrats will now know that you have weapons, as well as your address, phone #, etc.?

The law says that you can appeal for restoration of your rights but the Congress has denied the use of any funds to administer the hearings.

I'd like to see Congress appropriate $1.00 or so for a "DENIED" stamp and direct that it be used capriciously on all rights-restoration requests directed to the BATF. That way people could proceed to appeal the denial.

That makes it sound like a good system. But in our town in CT you have to present 3 letters of reference from people who have known you for an unspecified length of time and who, in the judgement of your police chief, say the right things. Still the chief can arbitarily deny the application. Sure you can appeal, but what a pain, and surely the letter requirement isn't what the writers of either the CT or the Fed constitution had in mind.

The situation in Connecticut is only going to get worse. It is a fluke that we have a Republican governor and, if this governor's personal issues remain under wraps and he survives this term, I doubt we'll have one again after 2006. (I suppose an ultra-liberal Republican like Chris Shays is possible, but even that is highly unlikely.)
