BOSTON - The fugitive mobster brother of University of Massachusetts President William Bulger was sighted in London a few months ago, sporting a tan and a gray goatee, the FBI said Friday.

A British businessman who had met James "Whitey" Bulger years ago spotted him in September - the most reliable tip on his whereabouts in three years, Boston FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said.

The mobster, a longtime FBI informant, fled in 1995, just before his indictment on charges of racketeering, extortion and drug trafficking. Mr. Bulger has also been charged since with involvement in the deaths of 21 people and is on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list.

Since the sighting, the FBI's multiagency violent-fugitive task force in Boston and inspectors from New Scotland Yard joined to search for Mr. Bulger, Ms. Marcinkiewicz said.

The FBI weighed possible drawbacks to releasing information about the sighting - such as tipping Mr. Bulger to leave England - but in the end decided it was best to go public, Ms. Marcinkiewicz said.

The businessman who alerted authorities said he had met Mr. Bulger while at a London hotel gym in 1994, a year before Mr. Bulger went on the lam.

The businessman, who was not identified, told The Boston Globe in Friday's editions that he spotted Mr. Bulger again on a London street in September.

The sighting was the most reliable since January 2000, when a hairdresser reported seeing Mr. Bulger and his 51-year-old girlfriend, Catherine Greig, in Fountain Valley, Calif., the FBI said.

I saw him in the Bahamas. He is a vicar or bishop in one of the Islands. It's very easy to become a vicar or bishop there, as you can start up you own ministry.

So many different church denominations and independants.

So Mr FBI Man, go look in the Bahamas, there are not too many caucasion clergy.

Makes sense. They've known of safe deposit boxes there for 5 years. Had to let him clean them out before they finally searched them a couple weeks ago.

James J. "Whitey" Bulger, is the brother of William Bulger, who is now serving as the President of the University of Massachusetts. In one of the news reports I read, they said that Whitey's brother William's name was on Whitey's check account in England .

William Bulger use to be the man in charge of the legislature of Massachusetts. A real liberal ( probably lying) democrat.

Now I remember. I think he was a mob informant who continued to do mob stuff and the accusation was that the FBI valued his info so much as to turn a blind eye to it.

I don't know if it's true, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

That's exactly right. Whitey ran the Irish mob in Boston for many years, while simultaneously feeding the FBI information. It was a perverse win/win situation - the FBI crippled the Italian mob, Whitey's main competition. Whitey's handler, John Connelly, is now doing time for tipping Whitey to his 1995 indictment, not to mention ignorning and possibly okaying many murders and crimes. Most people in Boston believe the FBI will never find him, as there are certainly agents who still have an interesting in keeping Whitey safe - he knows where *many* bodies are buried. The book "Black Mass" is a fabulous read about the whole situation.

BTW, Whitey's brother Billy Bulger is the former President of the Massachusetts senate, now President of UMass.

I hope they catch this guy and connect all the dots to his South Boston buddies. It would sure be a plus for Governor Mitt Romney. I have a feeling that the evil from this man, still exist in this state. More than that I hope they prove that his brother Billy knew where he was all the time.

I have not read "Black Mass" , but should get a copy of it. I live in Massachusetts, and have been fascinated by this story for a long time. Just in the last year they found one of his victims buried in Hopkinton, Mass. A few years ago, they were digging up his victims on some beach in Quincy, Mass.

Billy Bulger was no liberal. He was a conservative pro life Democrat who was hated by the Globe and liberals. But he ran Massachusetts, regardless of who was governor (a weak position in Massachusetts) like a dictator for 20 years. It was always rumored that he was the real head of the Irish mob in Boston and his brother was his bag man. The corruption in this state runs deep.
