LOS ANGELES(AP) - Mohammed al-Fassi, the Saudi Arabian sheik who stirred controversy for redecorating his mansions in Beverly Hills and Miami Beach with gaudy statues and religious signs, has died. He was 50.
Al-Fassi died of an infected hernia on Dec. 24 in Cairo, Egypt, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The house was right on Sunset Blvd., only a few blocks from the Beverly Hills Hotel, and it was a grand old mansion. Strangely, the paint on the classical statues didn't look bad; the Greeks and Romans used to do the same thing. But the guy apparently went so loony with various "renovations" that the house had to be torn down -- it couldn't be re-sold. A $6 million pad at the time.

Infected hernia. That had to have hurt.
