Rotten Tomatos takes ALL available reviews, from all available sources (which includes National Review and most Internet sites) to come up with its ratings. All they do is assign a "positive" or "negative" to each review, and add them all up. Over 60% positive gets a "FRESH" rating, less gets a "ROTTEN" rating.

Such a system cannot be free of bias, as it uses normal media and newspapers. However, it gives the most accurate movie ratings I've ever seen.

And let not your heart be troubled; it seems that conservatives are more likely to enjoy these films than liberals. At least, the only negative reviews I've read were written by Libs. Take that for what it's worth.

Actually, the director, Peter Jackson, has said that he dislikes that term. He prefers "Extended Edition", and I'm inclined to agree. He does not change the essence or tone of the movie, but merely adds footage removed from the theatrical version for pacing or time constraints.

Basically, the Extended Editions are a "gift" to hardcore fans of both the books AND the films. I noticed that the EE of "Fellowship" tracked more closely with the books.

Sorry I can't help you, I'm no techie, but since you've already asked a techie question I need to ask another.

Can anybody tell me of an application (preferrably free) that will allow me to pull audio from a DVD and make it into a .wav file?

I need to pull dialog from a movie for a Flash film I am putting together.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

This movie series has singlhandedly restored the sense of wonder I felt as a child going to the movies. The past decade or so really stank for films, with only a few exceptions.

Personally, I LOVE it when a movie is that good that I want to see it more than once.

The Trilogy will, no doubt, become a classic up there with "Gone With The Wind", "Casablanca", "Star Wars", "The Wizard Of Oz", and the "Indiana Jones" series. It will in ANY case have a place of honor in my (large) DVD collection.

I use Total Recorder. It's shareware that costs $11 to register. Found it under CNET downloads.

My FoTR DVD seemed to insist on using "InterActual Player"

A lot of titles do that - it's because InterActual links to online content, so it's an "enhanced viewing experience", or some such marketing-speak ;)

Unfortunately, I don't know off the top of my head how to do captures with InterActual. However, the disks should play just fine with any software DVD player - just insert the disk, shut down the IA player, and start up Windows' own DVD player (assuming you have it installed). On that player, the capture button is the little button with a squarish icon, right next to the "Help" button at the bottom - mash the button when you see the image you want to capture, and it will prompt you for a title and save it in JPEG format. Easy as pie ;)

Somebody please answer this for me. I saw the movie last night. There were some warriors that had veils across their faces, with big elephants in the scene too. Did they participate in the seige on the castle, or not?

I don't think I need more Helm's Deep footage but I would appreciate more of the Faramir/Frodo scenes and M&P/Treebeard. Those seemed a bit choppy to me in the theatrical release.

Sounds like you'll get your wish. And as far as the extended Helm's Deep sequence goes, I thought the same about the climactic battle in FOTR. In the acual DVD, however, I found myself liking the new stuff. I also thought I'd HATE the extended scenes in Hobbiton, but those turned out to be my favorites.

Moral of the story? Peter Jackson hasn't let us down yet...I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt on this one, no?

Those were the Haradrim, Men of the East, who served Sauron. The beasts were called oliphaunts, and were a corrupt version of elephants bred for war.

Funny, I always thought, how Tolkien had the Arabs (who are widely recognized as the prototypes for the Haradrim) pegged way back in the '50s.

I'm not against more Helm's Deep footage...I just think there are places that need the extra time more.
