That's the point I've been trying to make over at the HH and other threads. Thanks for making it much better than I have been doing.
I agree, some of those scenes should have remained. The gift-giving scene was incredibly important, also some of the scenes showing the ranger/hunter side of Aragorn as well as his background with the Elves, IMHO, were important. I had somebody sitting next to me in TTT asking how Aragorn was able to track the Hobbits/Orcs (they hadn't read the books). It's not a big deal to those of us who have read the books, but to somebody who hadn't read the books, they would not know that Aragorn was a bad-a$$ ranger/hunter....
I shouldn't nit-pick I suppose, Peter Jackson did what I didn't think anybody would be able to do.
All very important thoughts and questions.
I would throw in "what is friendship and loyalty" as well. The movies captured those two themes/questions and did a good job. Gandalf basically giving his life to save the rest in the mines, the trio setting out to rescue Merry and Pippin, without really giving a thought to the fact that they would be vastly outnumbered and might even die. Sam staying loyal to Frodo even when he sees the ring turning Frodo into a monster (at the risk of his own life). I won't get into the RotK for those who haven't read it.
I would say the LotR trilogy would be the ultimate "buddy" movie. There are a lot of movies that revolve around friendships/companions and loyalty, but none can come close to LotR.
Whatever you do, do NOT
Go to the scene selection on the first disc,
Move the selector down to the last scene
Then move down again so a ring appears at the bottom of the screen next to 'new scene/extended scene'.
Hit enter.
If you do this, a disturbing scene of the 'other' Council of Elrond will appear. You DON'T want to see this bonus version.
You have been warned.
Gee, did you really think Frodo turns into a monster? He's a little short-tempered with suffering, certainly, but he's really metamorphosing into a type of Christ (as many of the characters in the story do, sacrificing in one way or another for the greater good).
Those of you who are Faramir marks will not be disappointed, nor will those wanting more ENT-citement.
Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you talking about where Gandalf recites the poem and everyhting gets dark/hellish and Elrond gets upset?
No, he's talking about a skit from the MTV movie award show featuring a comedian named Black and Buffy the Vampyre Slayer.
They do a very low brow skit intercut with the movie. It really is very well done. And somewhat disgusting. Its also available online somewhere. I can look it up if anyone is interested.
I hated that to and also the way they made him so immoble. Just because he was short and stalky didn't mean he couldn't be nimble quick and nimble as well. Jackson also made Pippin and Merry commic relief. In FOTR they were looking goofey and moronic complaining about not getting second breakfast and noonsies etc. after they get chased by the second scariest thing roaming Middle Earth (Ringwraiths.)
While I have read the books numerous times and can pick apart where Jackson changes the story and puts lines from other parts of the book into the situation, I think he has done a masterful job so far. I can't wait to see the Return of the King!
