PANAMA CITY — A country known for its hats, bananas and dictators has become a battleground for Taiwan and China, wealthy adversaries aggressively bidding for friends and influence a hemisphere away.

Panama is one of the few countries that has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. But the presence of the Panama Canal gives China too big a stake to walk away in protest.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican:
"If Beijing wanted to apply pressure, Chinese-owned ships could clog the waterway, and its workers could go on strike," he said.

My friend Dana has yet to visit Panama and talk with the Panamanian canal workers. Panamanians have nothing to gain by striking to help a starving military power.

"But are we worried about the Chinese in Vancouver?

Are we worried about the billions in Chinese merchandise purchased in Red China (instead of Taiwan) by Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Crate & Barrel and sold to US consumers?

China and Taiwan are courting Panama's ethnic Chinese community, about 200,000 people in a nation of 2.8 million, whose ancestors arrived 150 years ago as laborers.
...who by the way, were shipped there by a US company building a transcontinental railroad...

Li Yonglu, China's trade representative and de facto ambassador to Panama, dismissed Taiwan's efforts as ineffective. He said that 95 percent of Chinese-Panamanians support reunification of Taiwan with mainland China because of the community's ancestral origins in the mainland.
Imperial Mandarin Yonglu forgets that 95% of the Chinese-Panamanians are in Panama to escape Communism and would not go back to the Middle Kingdom.
Even though the US and South Africa has abandoned Taiwan and recognized China, Panama and Israel remain stubborn in their support of anti-Communist Taiwan ...

"If Beijing wanted to apply pressure, Chinese-owned ships could clog the waterway, and its workers could go on strike," he said.

Then it would be war between the US and China as it would violate "The Monroe Doctrine."

"If Beijing wanted to apply pressure, Chinese-owned ships could clog the waterway, and its workers could go on strike," he said.

The Panamanians working on the Canal would not willingly go on strike: it would be a lockout, with full pay, to avoid alienating the workers.

FYI - Citigroup to buy 10% stake in China's Shanghai Pudong Development Bank
You may want to consider avoiding the Citigroup folks. They are investing more and more into the PRC (especially their dubious financial structure).

There is such a simple solution to all this - have official diplomatic relations with both China and Taiwan and stop all the make believe.

US needs to do it, then everyone will.

China will be mad but can do nothing.
