What good is NAFTA if it only benefits a few already wealthy people in both countries but harms the majority of people in both?

Throughout history the upper classes have had only one interest. The maintenance of their status and guaranteeing that the peasantry never rises to threaten that status or that of their progeny.

The real division in the world always has been class. In the end that matters more than race, religion or nationality.

I think what's really sad is they have these warning signs, but they still don't want to let go of wrong ways and then it's going to be too late. I hear a lot of stories about Pancho Villa (because of where I live)---some pretty bad --from families whose homes he rode through. One grandmother was a little girl who hid terrified when they came riding into their home and breaking and burning things, then they fled to the US which was hard because they had been used to having everything and a lot of servants which they lost. Many people died ---but it's interesting you meet people here who think he was a great hero.

I think the other thing the Mexican elite haven't considered is that their immigration safety valve could just as easily backfire on them. What happens now that tens of millions of illegals have seen a middle class lifestyle and have gotten a taste of what that can mean? And yet the class system in Mexico won't allow a middle class to develop, and what happens if some of these campesinos decide they don't want to be humble day laborers in the US waiting in a Home Depot parking lot for a job and amnesty? Some might want their own lands back.
