N.Y. Says "No" to Mexican Consular IDs

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City and the state refuse to accept identification cards issued by the Mexican consulate as valid forms of ID for Mexican immigrants, a published report said.

The cards, issued by Mexico's 43 consulates in the United States, are rejected by the city's Police Department and state Department of Motor Vehicles because of security concerns, The New York Times reported Saturday.

The card has been issued since March. It shows the date of birth, a current photograph and the address of the card holder.

Mexican officials say the consular ID card is secure and has built-in safety protections.

Several Northeastern states, including New Jersey and Connecticut, also reject the card. Thirteen states currently accept it, as do at least 60 American financial institutions. City officials in Detroit also are considering whether to accept the cards.

Salvador Beltran del Rio Madrid, the Mexican consul general in New York, told the Times he has quietly lobbied government officials to have the consular card added to a list of acceptable forms of identification.

Are Mexican consulars overstepping their authority here?

I can see a few thousand a year for the entire country.

But hundreds of thousands?

This card has as many built-in safety protections as my 5 year-old daughter drawing a stick figure of me w/ her Crayolas and calling it an ID card.

sarcasm>

Surely, these consulars wouldn't be using the power of their consular positions by issuing these cards for monetary or other personal favors?

I consider these actions by officials of foreign governments an act of war. These people who work on behalf of the Mexican government are working to install their government officials into U.S. elected offices and thereby gain control of the southwest United States without a shot being fired.

Yes, but they are doing all of this at the consent of the U.S. Government. By doing nothing about it, Uncle Sam is authorizing it by omission.

What caught my eye was the statement of Mexico's 43 consulates within the U.S. I seriously doubt there is any other nation in the world with this number of consulates in the U.S. - in and of itself this is worth raising some serious questions (but I won't hold my breath waiting for the media or our own State Department, which authorizes foreign consulates, to question any of it).

It's all about creating a Mexican "nation" within the United States.

My understanding is that to get this card, you have to have a Mexico issued birth certificate.
Who can't fake one of those or buy a real one in
mexico for a few bucks?

No one in the USA should be accepting this as legal ID period!!!

There are currently over 5 million illegal aliens from Mexico in the US.

The only Mexican that needs this card is and ILLEGAL ALIEN.

Hundreds of thousands is a drop in the bucket for what the Mexican Government wants. They want all 5+ million illegals to have these cards and have the cards excepted nation wide.

It is a step toward recognition and ultimately amnesty for the Mexican illegals.

Central Americans often buy Mexican birth certificates so they can easily travel through Mexico to the US and not get deported back. Mexicans tend to use the IFE card as identification ---so if they're only using birth certificates, I'd bet a good number with matricula cards aren't even Mexicans.
