T'was ALL IN GOD's Plan, perhaps...?
NEVER FORGET
...three hours of dark and violent battles, which is what I didn't like about LOTR
I.e. she didn't like that it was "three hours of dark and violent battles." Whether she meant that, or meant that the few battles in FOTR discredited the whole movie for her (i.e. I guess they should have held hands with Sauron and sang Kum By Ya, then all would have been well; or done all the fighting off-screen, then discussed the outcome over wine and cheese onscreen, with Julia Roberts as Arwen), I stand by my response.

Gladly done!
God bless you and all those who gave some, or gave all.
That said, and to take nothing away from We Were Soldiers, this was probably the worst year (overall) for movies that I can remember.
With all due respect, I disagree...
BTW, while the movie was excellent all the way round, Madeline Stowe's mannequin-like appearance was a bit distracting, wouldn't you say?
Contrast the dissing of Saving Private Ryan with Spielberg's other WWII blockbuster, Schindler's List. Private Ryan doesn't even get a look from the liberal Hollywood elite. Schindler's List wins best picture.
What's the difference, you ask? Schindler's List highlighted the plight of liberals' favorite group of helpless victims, the Jews -- at least until they became politically incorrect after 9/11 -- while damning liberals' favorite bogeymen, the Nazis.
Saving Private Ryan honored the American fighting man and America's role in the destruction of the greatest evil the world had faced to that time.
No movie that honors America will ever win best picture in this day and age.
I wish you'd been around to advise me before I saw all those films. I'm sure you would have been more graphic if FR didn't have rules. Giggle.
TTT-I'm sure there must be a pony in here somewhere. Hey, lighten up you all. I just said the trailers (the ads) made it seem dark. With soldiers being shot and killed for real and war looming with Iraq, I'm not in the mood for dark right now.
And thinking that maybe the soldiers aren't either, I sent more comedies than action to them for Christmas:
To each his/her own, but it was my impression that Miss Stowe's obvious rather taut plastic surgery apparently limited much visible expression.
WHO CARES?! Seriously, the debate is what we want, not the hardware, IMHO. Have you tried to go in any WalMart accross America to find this movie? I have...musta checked a half-dozen WalMarts accross Virginia and haven't seen this move YET!! After FReepers and DittoHeads and FNCers debate why HollyWeirdo is so unabashedly Lib'ral that it ignores this movie when Prizes are awarded, well, I'll bet'cha WalMart will start selling this movie...may even set up one of them there cardboard displays.
And isn't that really the point?!
