C-SPAN will air college course on Clinton years

Arkansas-Little Rock class to be 1st shown in its entirety by network

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The first college course to be aired in its entirety by the C-SPAN public affairs cable network will be devoted to former President Bill Clinton, its professor says.

"The Clinton Presidency" will also be the first nationally televised class for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, said Margaret Scranton, a political science professor who is developing the curriculum and who will teach the class starting Jan 16.

An agreement between the network and the school was reached last week, Dr. Scranton said.

Guest lecturers will include, among others, longtime Clinton lawyer David Kendall, Clinton confidant and counsel Bruce Lindsey, former NATO commander Wesley Clark and Mr. Clinton.

Dr. Scranton said she has also invited Hickman Ewing, a prosecutor who spearheaded the Whitewater phase of the criminal investigation of the Clintons, as well as staunch Clinton critics Newt Gingrich and Drug Enforcement Administration director Asa Hutchinson, who was one of the House prosecutors in Mr. Clinton's impeachment trial.

"We're going to talk about the politics of impeachment," Dr. Scranton said.

"There's a political layer that we're going to peel off."

The course, offered in cooperation with the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation, will serve as the prototype for the planned Clinton School of Public Service at the former president's library, slated to open in 2004.

It will touch on the achievements and travails of Mr. Clinton's political life - and the scandals and controversies that dogged his private life.

"How many people get to study the presidency this close?" said Skip Rutherford, president of the Clinton foundation.

Dr. Scranton, a Republican, recognizes the strong emotions stirred by talk of Mr. Clinton and said student orientation will involve "a 15-minute lecture on civility," followed by a showing of The War Room, a documentary on the 1992 Clinton campaign.

"The nation continues to be obsessed with the Clinton years. Why can't we get over Bill Clinton? People just can't," Dr. Scranton said. "But the tabloid times are past. ... In the classroom, our job is to reflect on the deeper meaning and the perspective that time can give us."

That reflection will include not only impeachment, but Mr. Clinton's campaign style, his rise from Southern governor to political powerhouse, foreign policy, health care, the economy and the former president's legacy.

Dr. Scranton said she has also invited the only two politicians to defeat Mr. Clinton - former Arkansas governor Frank White and former Arkansas congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt - "to talk about how you campaign effectively and succeed against this incredible, personable, charismatic, energetic Clinton."

Mr. White defeated Mr. Clinton in his run for governor in 1980. Mr. Clinton lost his first run for office in 1974 against Mr. Hammerschmidt, the incumbent, in northwest Arkansas' 3rd District.

"One of the things that drives Republicans nuts is what an effective campaigner Clinton is," Dr. Scranton said.

Terry Murphy, C-SPAN's vice president for programming, said the network has broadcast classes from Georgetown University, American University and the University of Maryland but never covered every class in a course.

"We've never been presented with the opportunity to cover a class on one [presidential] administration," Mr. Murphy has said. "And this is the first time we've ever really looked at covering an entire class."

The course will be offered in two separate versions, online and at the school, with 25 students in each class.

Dr. Scranton said the university will also begin offering the nation's only undergraduate presidential studies minor next semester.

They ought to show True Colors, it's a bit more accurate.

It can't be done, but you can spell your name in the snow after a case of point beer on New Years Eve in Wisconsin.

Well Skip, Monica Lewinski got pretty close. However, I doubt she'll be invited as a guest lecturer.

No, Maggie, that's not what drives (thinking Americans) nuts. It's the ease with which the SHeeple wanted to be deceived that makes normal Americans crazy. I'll withhold judgement on your course until after I've viewed a few sessions. The list of lecturers will be telling and may I suggest you get a few glasses of brandy ready and invite Christopher Hitchens for at least a day.

Does anyone else see the irony behind a history course about a couple who testified over and over, "I can't recall"?

They are no different that the Republican sheeple who insist Bubba-2 is the second coming of Christ, and has the best interestes of America in mind. ALL Bubba-2 cares about is "what is best for the Bush family, and how can we stay as a part of the ruling elite?". Anybody who can't see that is self-blinded.

sp, there are some things happening under Bush Administration that I disagree with, but there is no way that I will put George W. Bush in the same area of the ethical universe as the reprobate Bill Clinton. There is just no comparison.
