He should have done this a long time ago.

Trent Lott has unwittingly put forth what NOT TO DO when one makes a public misstatement of any kind.

1)He should NOT apologize more than once, and preferably should merely "clarify" in a single paragraphy without a detailed "apology." An "apology" is needed only if the offense is "serious." Trent's initial comments were not serious but easily exploited by the left.
2)He should make no further comment after his initial clarification or apology if required.
3)He should not try to placate his opposition, for the opponents will settle for nothing less than his total destruction.
4)He should realize that his compatriots may be weak and spineless people who will not stand behind him when press attention gets heightened.
5)He should be super careful in speech and demeanor, realizing that the days of "free speech" have been grossly compromised by the left and by conservatives fearful of the left.
6)If he still cannot survive his plight, he should either fade away gracefully or, if possible depending on the circumstance, file suit and stand up for his rights in court.
7)Remember the old Arrid deodorant commercial: "Never let your enemies see you sweat."

Lott is too stupid to hold such a position.
