Pop star Trevi finally returns to Mexico to face sex charges

Singer leaves Brazil with baby born in jail during extradition fight

CANCÚN, Mexico - Gloria Trevi, a Mexican pop diva known for her splashy sexuality, was extradited from Brazil to Mexico on Saturday to face charges that she lured starry-eyed girls into a sex cult run by her manager.

Ms. Trevi's arrival at the beach resort of Cancún ended a three-year odyssey in Brazil, during which she conceived a child while living in an all-female cell block and vowed to avoid extradition by marrying a Brazilian diplomat.

Ms. Trevi - widely known as "Mexico's Madonna" - was met by a swarm of federal agents, who kept reporters and fans far from the plane's arrival gate.

Carrying her baby, Angel Gabriel, the 33-year-old singer left the plane and was driven a small distance to a private government jet, which took off for the northern city of Chihuahua.

Ms. Trevi, her ex-husband and manager Sergio Andrade, and backup singer Maria Raquenel Portillo were arrested in a beachfront apartment in Rio de Janeiro in January 2000.

Chihuahua state prosecutors have charged the women with aggravated rape, kidnapping and corruption of minors, saying they recruited adolescent girls for live-in "musical training" that included sex with Mr. Andrade.

The accusations have dominated Latin American headlines - even though Ms. Trevi hasn't had a hit single since 1996.

The chief accuser is Karina Yapor, a 17-year-old Chihuahuan girl whose parents let her join Ms. Trevi's entourage for musical training five years ago. The girl abandoned a baby in Spain in 1998, claiming that Mr. Andrade was the father.

The Brazilian Supreme Court authorized the extradition of Ms. Trevi, Mr. Andrade and Ms. Portillo in December 2000, but the suspects maintained their innocence and fought their return.

Last month, Ms. Trevi said she would no longer fight extradition, and asked to be returned to Mexico to defend herself.

And YOU meek and mean, have truly poor taste, to glorify and make look like 'beauty', someone who ruined lives of little innocent girls. Believe me, I'm in Mexico now, and see how tragic it is young girls being drawn into prostitution for the thrills of look alikes of your type. Shame, pain and tears...to Glori..May the LONG arm of Justice prevail.

And if she's guilty under the law, she will pay the price.....

Mexico does have the "Innocent until proven guilty" clause, right? This is the first I've heard of this story, btw.....

How else do they expect young girls to be treated in a country where prostitution is legal and anything goes for the right 'mordida'?

Andrade's biggest mistake was probably not sharing his under-age harem with the right government officials and paying enough bribes.
