Commentary: Lott Throws In The Towel Gary Bauer President, American Values
After days of endless apologizing, Trent Lott has thrown in the towel and resigned as Senate Majority Leader. Late last night he began making phone calls to GOP colleagues to let them know his decision.
Also over night the White House began a more concerted push to replace Lott with Senator Bill Frist, who will now emerge as the "frontrunner."
Frist is a savvy media personality, but he angered many conservatives by interfering in Republican primaries around the country, virtually always in favor of the moderate candidate over the conservative. And he was a staunch supporter of former Surgeon General Satcher, who was pro-abortion. I hope a more reliable conservative-- either Nickles or Santorum-- will throw their hat in the ring.
Now comes the hard part. This mess doesn't end with Lott's resignation. The GOP needs to find its backbone. One example: There are reports that the Administration is now afraid to go into court against the University of Michigan's offensive racial quota system that selects students from certain minority groups regardless of grades while rejecting white students with much higher grades.
For 30 years the Republicans have opposed these quasi-quota schemes. Are we now going to throw in the towel because of the smear campaign against Republicans of the last two weeks?
Some insiders are suggesting there will be reluctance at the White House to nominate conservative judges. Such reports better be inaccurate or the conservative base of the party will be gone.
Let me bring up again one easy way for the White House to signal that it knows how to play hardball and help Americans of all races. Many Washington D.C. schools are abysmal and the children, mostly black, trapped in them are ill served. The White House should send a school voucher program to Capitol Hill on the first day of the new Congress just for the District of Columbia. Ted Kennedy will scream. Hillary Clinton will pull her hair out. Daschle will reach for the Maalox. And they will line up and vote "no" against those black families and in favor of the teacher unions.
Last year Bush dropped his voucher plan because Kennedy refused to let it out of Committee, but there should be no cave in this time.
:-}
If you want Lott out because you do not like the job he is doing, fine; get rid of him.
But if you want him out because of the things that he said at an old man's birthday; things that have been manipulated into portraying Conservatives (Not just Lott) as still racist; then you are playing right into the Liberals sweetest desires.
Don't be fooled by the theory that we are better with Trent out of there, because 'Now the Liberals don't have anything to complain about', because that is NOT what they were after.
They want to be able to not only attack Conservatives, but to GET RID OF THEM WHENEVER THEY WANT, WITHOUT EVEN THE SEMBALANCE OF DUE PROCESS!!!
Think about it; we suffered here for 8 long years with a President who openly broke Federal laws, AND WE COULD NOT GET RID OF HIM! The Liberals screamed that his crime did not 'Rise to the level of Impeachment'. And he got away with it.
Now we have an individual who BROKE NO LAWS; indeed, he simply exercised what is supposed to be his Freedom of Speech, and because his words were twisted to imply that he actively supported Racism, (Even though he DID NOT ACTUALLY STATE THAT), the Left successfully had him removed from his position with absolutely NO DUE PROCESS!!
Amazing. Mark my words; this has opened the floodgates. This opens up the potentional that anytime they (The Left) wants to get rid of a Conservative, all they have to do is find a way to tie him to the evil of Racism, (Or some other 'Politically Incorrect' stance) and they can have him forced out with absolutely NO DUE PROCESS!
In conclusion, the Right has proved themselves whimps once again by caving in, (Did the Left cave in and give up Clinton???? How about Byrd???), and they have handed another big power card to the Liberals. To all of those Conservatives that wanted to put their heads back into the sand by giving up Lott, well, you made a huge mistake. You've told the Liberals that they can have their way any time they want it.
Up until two weeks ago, conservatives were clamoring for Lott's removal precisely because of his annoying habit of saying dumb things. (Showing their inferior intellect, liberals have only recently figured that out.) Republicans should ask Lott to step down as leader, but only for all the nice things he's said about Teddy Kennedy.
---Ann Coulter---
Just cause you are hot for her bod Todd, don't be a hypocrite. Ann called for republicans to dump Lott. You said to ban, boycott those who called for Lott to quit, (except for leggy blondes that ya like, I guess)
Problem is, Lott has made a habit of saying stupid things that a.) embarrassed us all and b.) required apologies be made by and for him.
It was only a matter of time before he stepped in a deeper pool of you-know-what and took us along for the ride. What followed this particularly inane stupidity was breathtaking in its scope.
During the Trent Lott Apologia Tour, he managed to a.) give away the farm and b.) implicate us all in his own guilt.
Trent Lott did it to himself. The lib media set the stage but it was Lott who went out into the spotlight...and shot himself in the foot.
All of this serves to demonstrate why he wasn't an effective Majority Leader in the first place.
LOL, you've got to be kidding? This is an internet board, not the fifthe circuit.
But we'll do an unscientific poll.
I would like to know what the bush administrations stand is on the University of Michigan quota system. How about you?
That's the bottom line. Those who wanted Lott out have gotten their wish. Along with that wish, expect some unintended consequences - more affirmative action, more racial quotas, more abortion. And, perhaps, some sort of reparations payments. Oh, and more illegal immigration, since stopping that might be construed as racism.
But, what the hey, we got to hound Lott out of his leadership position! My, how brilliant we are! (/bitter sarcasm)
Don't forget the VICIOUSNESS of the "canonized conservatives," who abandoned Lott. And George W. Bush, who jumped on Lott and all but labelled him a racist, but praised him today, as a "good man."
While you blast Lott as "unprincipled and ineffectual," remember this: he was elected, unanimously by his fellow GOP Senators.
When we wash the hypocrisy off, we can move on.
True, but irrelevant. We had an assertion. I was merely asking what led that guy to make the assertion--aside from wishful thinking.
But we'll do an unscientific poll.
Which will be worth about as much as it cost to perform.
I would like to know what the bush administrations stand is on the University of Michigan quota system.
I'd like to know where the government hid the crashed UFO from Roswell, especially since Al Gore was born exactly nine months after the event. Doesn't mean I'm going to get my way now, does it?
Lott had a 93% ACU rating.
Was this before or after Lott threw himself on the mercy of the liberal left, confessed that he was part of an "immoral" racist southern GOP and pledged his support for affirmative action or whatever other position might help redeem his image with the left wing racebaiters?
Btw, Lott's BET interview was pandering and disgusting.
He was?
(and all this time I thought he invented it..)
Well now, this is getting interesting. Talk about hypocrisy on display.
It would explain much, wouldn't it?
Your opinion is that Americans aren't interested in where the Bush administration stands on affirmative action.
My opinion is that your position is as clueless as it gets.
