Commentary: Lott Throws In The Towel (Conservative base will be gone)

Commentary: Lott Throws In The Towel Gary Bauer President, American Values

After days of endless apologizing, Trent Lott has thrown in the towel and resigned as Senate Majority Leader. Late last night he began making phone calls to GOP colleagues to let them know his decision.

Also over night the White House began a more concerted push to replace Lott with Senator Bill Frist, who will now emerge as the "frontrunner."

Frist is a savvy media personality, but he angered many conservatives by interfering in Republican primaries around the country, virtually always in favor of the moderate candidate over the conservative. And he was a staunch supporter of former Surgeon General Satcher, who was pro-abortion. I hope a more reliable conservative-- either Nickles or Santorum-- will throw their hat in the ring.

Now comes the hard part. This mess doesn't end with Lott's resignation. The GOP needs to find its backbone. One example: There are reports that the Administration is now afraid to go into court against the University of Michigan's offensive racial quota system that selects students from certain minority groups regardless of grades while rejecting white students with much higher grades.

For 30 years the Republicans have opposed these quasi-quota schemes. Are we now going to throw in the towel because of the smear campaign against Republicans of the last two weeks?

Some insiders are suggesting there will be reluctance at the White House to nominate conservative judges. Such reports better be inaccurate or the conservative base of the party will be gone.

Let me bring up again one easy way for the White House to signal that it knows how to play hardball and help Americans of all races. Many Washington D.C. schools are abysmal and the children, mostly black, trapped in them are ill served. The White House should send a school voucher program to Capitol Hill on the first day of the new Congress just for the District of Columbia. Ted Kennedy will scream. Hillary Clinton will pull her hair out. Daschle will reach for the Maalox. And they will line up and vote "no" against those black families and in favor of the teacher unions.

Last year Bush dropped his voucher plan because Kennedy refused to let it out of Committee, but there should be no cave in this time.

Prove to me Bush is not a liberal Republican?

Prove to me that you're not a DU poserboy trying to act like a "true conservative," and I'll consider talking civilly to you, freak.

All I can think is the pro-life issues, but that does not make sense. What is his occupation?

You are without a doubt the stupidest guy I have come across in quite some time.

Coming from someone who makes Al Gore look only slow-witted instead of completely moronic, that does not impress me.

The entire nation is embroiled in a debate on race and your position is that nobody cares where the administration comes down on the most important case to hit the Supreme Court, vis a vis affrimative action, since Bakke.

I hang out with politically active people, and our three main concerns are as follows:

Getting more tax cuts
National security and defense issues (Iraq, antiterrorism, missile defense, et cetera)
Tort reform

And those are taking up all of our time and effort.

Affirmative action ain't even on the radar at the moment, dude.

Why don't you just admit how ridiculous your position is here and then we can "move on"?

I asked you a straight-up question, and you have NOT answered it yet. You've done much to avoid actually answering the question, so I'll ask it again.

How many politically active people that you PERSONALLY know, outside of Free Republic, have the University of Michigan case at the top of their priority list?

He showed character today. Stepping down was not easy. The BET interview just did me in. He might as well have been on his knees and I just couldn't handle that. I still like him - I just find him a little weak.

Gary Bauer understates the problem. The Lott resignation will be the greatest encouragement possible, for the Left to Bork every Conservative Judicial nominee. Now that they have flexed their muscles and succeeded in making the Republicans act like a bunch of panic stricken delinquents, over a completely manufactured hue and cry, you can be absolutely certain that they will continue with the same tactics.

With all due respect, yours is among the most "panic stricken" response I've seen among republicans or conservatives anywhere.

Anybody who's paid attention knows that the DemonRat leftist liberals have been engaging in this exact same sort of smear tactic for years...and the idea that they've suddenly found this success against Lott that will encourage them to start using the tactic more is just plain silly.

The fact is Lott made statements that played right into the hands of the race-baiters, that didn't deserve to be defended. Even Lott knew that, and apologized repeatedly.
You obviously still haven't caught on to the reality, and are imagining all these paranoid scenarios about imaginary GOP racist gaffes manufactured by liberals...which we should all be worried about. LOL
This is ridiculous.

Senator Rick Santorum (R) Pennsylvania Republican, Years of Service: 11

so he is the man for the job but Rove and Bush already stopped him. Why?

Because Santorum is strongly and vocally pro-life, and Frist is pro-abortion? And Rove believes being pro-life is not a winning political position? Is that the answer?

The people I know that are politically active are all interested in the University of Michigan case because it will become the most recent precedent for affirmative action.

On the ride home tonight, almost every question on the talk radio I listen to, Jay Sevrin, was related to AA, race and quotas.

I answered your question.

Now, would you admit that you are clueless so we can "move on"?

Well, you settle it. You're a regular guy.

Are you interested in the way the affirmative action case shakes out?

If you say no, I'll move on.

You miss the point. We could of put an end to them ever using racism again if the republicans would of stood up to them.

Course I am.. A majority of people are, at least people I talk to.

I am not sure however if they are aware of this particular court case, it's implications or any possible squishing sounds coming from the White House on it.

If "bob six pack" were aware of it, then I say it would be an issue.

If the press climbs on it in a big way, sure.. It's gonna be a biggie.

^IMO.

Thank you. I am sick to death of hearing TBA judge everybody on this board who doesn't agree with her in supporting Lott as not being a "true conservative".
