I don't have any problem with the ping lists. I'm on the Black ping and the Israel ping, and I appreciate getting that mail. If someone picks up on some view that I've expressed and pings me for an article that discusses that viewpoint, I don't mind. I can't respond to all the pings or even open all the articles, but it's not like my mailbox is flooded.

Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion.

But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.

I agree wholeheartedly but could not have said it as succinctly as southernnorthcarolina.

My greatest dislike for "pinging" is it is so impersonal and especially when your handle isn't even on the list of "pingees"(please don't interpret this to mean I want to be on any ,repeat on any "ping" list).

Another peeve I have is it takes up valuable space in the "My Comments Section" where I go to see what responses I might have received from those who are interested to either criticize or agree with something I have posted or responded to.

There are lists people keep and there are names picked up in the course of conversation on a particular thread.

I agree with you in terms of continuing lists.

In terms of who I might ping who's been involved in a discussion on a thread up to that point, then I would disagree. Once someone comments on a particular thread they are fair game whether you address your reply to 1, 2, 3 or more.
