I'm sure shooting p-dogs is cool but its a tough call as to it beating out dog-fishing. There's nothing like cruising past a nicely shaded park in Hartford or Boston, chair secured in the bed of your favorite pickup truck, wind whistling in your hair ....
You lean back and hurl that small pug with a 2.5 oz weight and steel leader, and successfully drop it over the parked cars and practically in the mouth of that standard poodle.
The fun begins ! You play it between the cars, work it back out from under the shrubs where it tried to dig in ....and crank that poodle back and forth till its begging for the live keeper tank.
Naw, shooting prarie dogs IS cool but heck one can go to any Micky-D's and shoot seagulls or toss alka-seltzer tabs to the gulls and try to drop them like skeets before they burst... Life is just too good to believe !

We had a lively somewhat humorous discussion Saturday evening and one conversation went off to guiding the harnessed doggies across a busy four lane highway for extra points.

For a good time with friends try to come up with some fair rules for this new sport. Do it over a couple of beers at your favorite watering hole. Extra points if the discussion is in a city like Boulder or Berkely. LOL

OK, you guys have really peaked my interest here. Although I'm from Michigan, the only hunting I do is my annual Kansas pheasant trip. While there ain't no varmints here in Michigan other than socialists who aren't on the endangered species (but should be) but nevertheless out of season year around, you have caused me to rethink my personal Christmas present to myself. So here it is:

Given a maximum cost of between $2000 and $2500, what would be the varmint hunter's firearm/scope of choice here and could the same firearm be used to hunt coyote?

Keep in mind that varmints and coyotes would be the only game hunted by this firearm.

Also, if one were to attend this prairie dog extravaganza would shooting of these critters be allowed or is it fishing only? If shooting is allowed, what would be the costs involved once a person from out of state arrived in that town and had obtained lodging? Things like hunting license, guides (if required) etc........

Hey, a local golf course eliminated the pesky prairie dogs with poison as they were digging up the fairways and greens. The result? They were sued by every animal-hugging group you could imagine, but it all failed as they couldn't find a dead doggie to test for the poison. Sad case!

Our most difficult problem on our many golf courses are thousands of rabbits. They love eating the new mown grass. There are so many now that we now have another problem: coyotes that love to eat bunnies. Problem: it is illegal to hunt coyotes or bunnies near golf courses. We need a PC answer to this. The coyotes are less and less afraid of humans. What if they eat caddies or golfers next?

Depending on how steady you are, a .22 LR , with iron sights, can take out either varmit.
You just want a fast, flat trajectoy flight, one animal weighs 5 pounds and other no more than 45 pounds on a full belly.

As for me, a Remington 700 BDL, floated bull barrel in .22-250 with a 6x18 Leupold with a sunshade. The holes touch at a hunert with the right loads, (if it ain't too windy).
