More U.S. Soldiers Assaulted (in South Korea): Choson Ilbo Report
The Choson Ilbo Daily (Seoul) ^ | 20 December 2002 | Yu Yong-Won (Reporter)

More US Soldiers Assaulted by Yu Yong-won (kysu@chosun.com)

The 8th United States Army Command said Friday in a press release that three Koreans at Seoul Station physically and verbally assaulted two soldiers, Thursday morning. It stated that a staff sergeant identified as "M" and a Korean American Corporal "Y" were at Seoul Station to pick up a colleague around 10:30am, when two middle-aged men started to use abusive language and attempted to grab them by throats. The Korean American corporal stopped the two men and the American soldiers were unharmed.

The two soldiers then encountered another man in his 50s who approached "Y" and tried to snatch his tag reading US Army. The GIs tried to avoid the man, but he followed and continued to curse at them. A United States Forces Korea official said that four Korean soldiers and a reporter from a TV station were present and witnessed the scene, but did not stop the assault, and moreover, some laughed and spat at them. The official added that the soldiers only escaped the scene with the help of a man who claimed to have served in the Korean Augmentation Troops to the United States Army (KATUSA).

Prior to the incident, another attack on an American soldier took place around noon, Monday in Itaewon. A soldier who was standing near the pedestrian gate to the 8th Army base was shot in the chest with a toy bullet fired from a passing minivan. The soldier was unharmed, the USFK said.

The 8th Army is seriously concerned with the series of attacks targeting US soldiers stationed in Korea, and is reportedly preparing comprehensive preventative measures.

Maybe the communist are instigating these attacks in the hope the US military will leave.

I know when the US signed the Panama Canal Treaty, many Congressman were concerned about violence in that country. In truth, the vast majority of the population wanted the Americans to stay.

Ungratefull sods, they can keep their P.O.S. Kia cars. Pull out now and within 4 years they will be exchanging tree bark recipes with their northern neighbors. What idiots they are.

If they don't want us there that bad, give the South Koreans their wish.
The downside is, we'd be giving the North Koreans their wish as well.

Let's get our soldiers home. Let South Korea have what they want. We can stage operations into North Korea from Japan when the time comes.

Oh 'cmon now....that wouldn't work. Don't you know the USA naive, altruistic policy for years? Our troops are only sent to the borders of FOREIGN NATIONS, to prevent their neighbors from crossing illegally or taking over.

We would never think about sending US troops to OUR OWN borders to protect OUR OWN national security and territorial integrity, would we? /sarc

My first tour in Korea was in 1963 at Camp Casey. Back then whenever we went off post we were required to be armed and no it was not empty magazines. That was because of NK line crossers.

When we went on pass to Tong Du Chon we went only to the GI enclave which was heavily patrolled by both the MPs and the Korean Civil Police.

Never had one single problem but, of course, things were much different way back then.

Bingo! I have no doubt that N. Korean agents have been stirring the pot, prodding S. Koreans to attack our soldiers. The N. Koreans know they can't attack with American forces there.

I do see a benefit from our making some changes (minor force reduction) to make it clear to the new S. Korean leadership that we CAN leave unless they get control of the bad behavior being focused on our soldiers.

Sounds like Biker is supporting Americans to me. After all it was NKer's(opps pardon me SKer's) not that there is any difference, that elected the Anti-American as their leader. Our troops would be much better appreciated back home and let the North and South Koreans wipe each other out.

Right. Pull the troops out. From everywhere. And when some commie-lib gets quoted in the NY Times, we can pull them out of the US and station them on the moon.

The US elected Clinton! Maybe we should just disarm since a few in the US are against the military. You have no clue.
