Whaaaat? So how do the Marines get the guns to the new MCAS Miramar Rifle Range? Does that mean you retired guys can't shoot there? Is this something that has always been in place?

Not supposed to do this in Ca however whenever I travel I carry a pistol in the trunk with a magazine in the car. A few years ago I had a car problem out in the sticks. Pulled the gun out, put in magazine and waited for AAA. Chip came along and I told him I had a loaded weapon in the car because I didn't want to be sitting out in the middle of nowhere without and he didn't think much of it.

I found that a day planner works fine if one does not mind carrying "off body" with it. My concern is the gates having a dog some time when I go through and having him alert on it. I now know most of the guards and could probably just turn around and go back home, but you never know. The world and the attitude about personal security has changed in the past 16 months.

My problem with a day planner is that it is likely to attract a "snatch and run" theif, not only leaving you unarmed as you try to chase him down, but also arming him. I honestly can't think of any set of circumstances where a day planner would be appropiate that you couldn't just carry in your pocket or under a shirt.

I was stopped and had one found during a security increase maybe a year before 9-11. I talked my way into a turn around at the gate, it was a bad moment! Today, post 9-11, I'd have been handcuffed without a doubt.

Totally stupid, too. You have NCOs and officers trusted to fire million dollar weapons, but they are not trusted with a .45 in their car!

If a squad of terrorists infiltrates a base with AK-47s, they will have an unarmed victim zone, with just a few MPs to worry about. If 50% of the officers and NCOs and retirees had arms in their cars, that terrorist squad would not make it to the PX to begin their slaughter, they would have their fire fight begin on the parking lot while the MPs were coming.

BTW, I'll be off line until the 1st.

We had an office shooting on post five years ago. A civilian employee did not get promoted and so took it out on his supervisors and others who happened to be there. He killed three and injured at least three others. One is still in a nursing home. Just one worker with a gun might have been able to at least halfway even the odds. The shooter got off post as the shooting was within 1/2 mile of a gate and by the time the word of the shooting was out he was long gone. He later killed himself at the VA hospital in Louisville.

What I'm REALLY surprised at is how no ultra liberal, ACLU, NAACP types are out there making this bastard out to be a poor, down on his luck hero who was gunned down by a right wing, military nutcase.

Dead at the scene was Thaddeus Antone, 19, of Montgomery.

Let me guess...Republican?

Mindblowing.

Like having an E-5 watch a jet pilot pee in a cup to make sure he's not cheating on his urinalysis.

A pilot they trust in a 40 million dollar mach 2.5 jet armed and ready to blow a 747 out of the sky any day he chooses, or bomb Havana, or sink a Russian destroyer, and not one thing anybody can do to stop him...except trust he won't.

But they won't trust him to pee in a cup without an E-5 watching the stream from organ to cup.

(One of the reasons I didn't stay for a career, that type of monumental stupidity.)

The only security our bases have is the "image" that the bad guys have that military bases must be awesome places full of hard nosed troops running around with loaded machine guns.

If they only knew.

A military base is as soft a target as the average college campus, a guaranteed gun free zone, except for a handful of easily identified security.

When I left Vietnam they had an E-7 watching everyone. What a war story they have for the kids and now grandkids. "There I was surrounded by urinals . . . . . ."
