Reagan Was a Race Baiter, Time Says

Former President Ronald Reagan "set a standard for exploiting white anger and resentment rarely seen since George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door," writes Time magazine's Jack White.

In "Lott, Reagan and Republican Racism," Time reports that if the GOP wants to attract black voters, as White argues, "it must confront the legacy not only of Trent Lott, but also of former President Reagan."

In one of the sleaziest attempts yet to use the Trent Lott controversy to wage the leftists' latest race war against the GOP, White writes that it is with Reagan that "the Republicans' selective memory about its race-baiting habit really stands out."

White cites Reagan's speech at Philadelphia, Miss., "where three civil rights workers were murdered in one of the 1960s' ugliest cases of racist violence," as somehow being "a ringing declaration of his support for 'states' rights'" - which he describes as "a code word for resistance to black advances clearly understood by white Southern voters."

He attacks Reagan for his attempt, "once he reached the White House in 1981, to reverse a long-standing policy of denying tax-exempt status to private schools that practice racial discrimination and grant an exemption to Bob Jones University. But true to their pattern of white-washing Reagan's record on race, not one of Lott's conservative critics said a mumblin' word about the Gipper's deep personal involvement. They don't care to recall that when Lott suggested that Reagan's regime take BJU's side in a lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, Reagan responded, 'We ought to do it.' Two years later the U.S. Supreme Court in a resounding 8-to-1 decision ruled that Reagan was dead wrong and reinstated the IRS's power to deny BJU's exemption."

In White's sick view of the world, that proves Reagan to have been a racist.

"Republican leaders and their apologists tend to go into a frenzy of denial when members of the liberal media cabal bring up these inconvenient facts. It's that lack of candor, of course, that presents the biggest obstacle to George W. Bush's commendable and long overdue campaign to persuade more African-Americans to defect from the Democrats to the Republicans. It's doomed to fail until the GOP fesses up its past addiction to race-baiting, and makes a sincere attempt to kick the habit."

And of course there's no word about Robert "KKK" Byrd or Democrat race-baiting.

Having failed to exploit class warfare in the November elections or convince black voters to turn out in huge numbers last month, the liberals are now resorting to racial warfare, once again setting whites against blacks for political gain. From the outset, this strategy has been obvious, but White's Time piece gives the show away.

They have no shame.

Good ol' Jack White, Time's race pimp in residence. I'll have to check frontpage.com for an 'open reply' from Horowitz.

"a code word for resistance to black advances clearly understood by white Southern voters."

That's right they was handing out them decoder rings at the RNC national convention. Why I got mine right here.. Let's see if I type in freedom as a code word it decodes it as, "put them in the back of the bus." Or if I type in equal it translates to, "give them separate drinking fountains."

So you see how it works when a Republican says, "We believe in freedom and equal rights for all Americans." They are saying, "Drown them in the back of the bus with their own drinking fountain." Or something to that effect.

This is good. This is what we need. The best thing that could happen right now is if the Democrats and the media go over the top with this stuff and start finding a racist in every Republican bed.

People aren't going to buy that; they're going to see it for what it is. Lott may go, but the next guy will be immunized.

Note to Carl:

May I respectfully recommend that you do not concern yourself with a washed up, has-been publication like TIME ? I don't even see the thing at my kids' orthodontist's office anymore. No kidding. I think that both TIME and Newsweak are wheezing and lurching to their finish. Their leftist proclivities are shameless and well-established, and this probably served them well back in the '60s and '70s.

But at this point, TIME is about as irrelevant a publication as I can think of. I would not give that garbage any publicity or recognition by responding to their latest leftist claptrap. Just let the magazine die.

Best regards,
LH

People ask why, if the GOP is for smaller government, why does it grow regardless. This is why. The only way to shrink government is to honestly address the failures of the social programs and legislation built around the "race issue". When a man can be labeled a racist based on other's reading of his mind, how in the HELL can anyone question the massive programs that benefit racial, sexual, age or gender groups without being professionally ruined?

What upsets Mr. White is the fact Ron Reagan signed Martin Luther King Jr day into law as a national holiday.

Good luck being able to link Regan to any racism.

They can try but will continue to fail.

The only thing the democrats did to recognize MLK was to have the attorney general; Robert Kennedy tap all of MLK's phones.

David Horowitz responds to Time magazine's "slander"

8/25/99

Jack White's animus toward me is one thing; Time's failure to exercise responsible editorial control over its columnist is another. The question I ask you is: How do I get my reputation back? What do I tell my African-American daughter-in-law or my three granddaughters when they ask me why an otherwise reputable magazine like Time would pillory their grandfather as a racial bigot, putting me in a category alongside Buford Furrow and other deranged hate-mongers? How, as a public figure, do I carry on the quest for a frank and honest dialogue over race if I am stigmatized with a label like this, which I have done nothing to deserve? Why would anyone else attempt to engage in candid talk about race, seeing what has happened to me?

Ronald Wilson Reagan left office at the end of 1988. Nothing cements his legacy and underscores his great contributions as President more than the continuing and totally ineffective efforts of the leftists to demonize him almost fifteen years later.

Thanks, Gipper, and God Bless!

Regards,
