Well...Joe must be proud. Though, if their giving away a Theisman Award it would be more appropritae that it go to a Notre Dame player.

And change the award to a golden broken drumstick.

Is he related to Tyne Daly, 2/3 of Cagney and Lacey?

I don't get the Daly joke, I guess. His name's Carson Palmer.
He was the guy I guessed would get it for the following reasons.
First, McGahee and Dorsey would split a bunch of votes making it harder for either of them to win. (By the way, they are both good, but it's hard to be named the best college football player in the country when people aren't even sure you're the best on your team.)
Second, USC has enough tradition to actually show up on the radar screen of the voters, even if they didn't stay up to watch him play much. He's following in the some pretty big footsteps and USC is definitely a Heisman-rich school.
Third, the Heisman has sparked so much controversy recently which reached fever pitch in many places because of the regional bias. The very fact that no one from the west coast had won since 1981 was quite an indictment on the voters and I think a lot of the voters wanted to escape that criticism and Palmer was the best way to do so.
By the way, Palmer is very deserving of it, I think, so I don't consider this all politics. Glad he won it.

No, IIRC he is the son of Johnny Carson, and has never eaten sugar or fast food and was raised to be a quarterback.

I thought Kit Carson would win it.

Actually I believe Miss Kitty died in Carson City a few years ago, survived by Festus.

I woulda given it to the Washington State QB."I get teased a lot. 'Gess who? Gess who?' I take grief every day", he said. "When I throw a pass that misses, they say `Gess who drilled that pass?'

Dan,
Curt Anes from Grand Valley State won the Harlon Hill Award yesterday, which is the NCAA Division II version of the Heisman Trophy.
Grand Valley State won the NCAA Division II Championship today against Valdosta State. The game was on ESPN.
