- In 1948, Thurmond was running for the "STATES' RIGHTS" party
- He was a 3rd party candidate, and 3rd place finisher.
- The US gov. had just SWOLEN to enormous size due to the depression and WW-II.
- One major theme of the "STATES' RIGHTS" party was that the FEDERAL GOV should go back to being smaller, and STATES should get back more power.
- I heard Lott's words a week ago, and they could easily have been innocent, and just meaning that the "STATES' RIGHTS" party had some good points which still hold true today.
This country WOULD be 'better-off' today with a smaller federal bureacracy. - it is just the liberal media that labelled this story with a 'racial spin'.
I also wasn't alive yet when all this happened, so feel free to argue all you want about it, 'specially if u R a 'dim.
I wish we could all just drop this non-issue soon. I think it is a MUCH larger story that Al-Qaeda now has VX gas, and a tiny droplet no bigger than the width of a human hair will kill you in less than a minute. Your muscles will convulse and spasm violently until your spine snaps like a chicken-bone.
Well except for the fact that Thurmond and the rest of the Dixiecrats were just bigoted Democrats and not bigoted Republicans. Bigoted Republicans would be in favor of lower taxes, lower government expenditures, etc. Democrats, like Thurmond, weren't fiscal conservatives.
