How many times can you say "mea culpa" before it loses its' effect.
Cardinal Law, you have an opinion on this?

Lets take a trip into the past.Do you recall that Sen.Byrd was a member of the KKK, and he used the N word last year on Fox TV. Mr.Byrd came out with a statement about "white N****rs" and the liberal press became very silent about the background of Sen.Byrd and the KKK.

This is what Lott should have done. He should have said, just one time.. "I AM OFFENDED THAT ANYBODY WOULD ACCUSE ME OF BEING A RACIST. MY RECORD... MY ACTIONS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW ME AND MISINTERPRETED MY GOODNATURED PRAISE FOR AN AGING COLLEAGUE AS A RACIST STATEMENT, THEN I APOLOGIZE. I HOPE YOU TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO EXAMINE WHAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS DONE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL COLORS. THERE IS NOTHING MORE THAT NEEDS TO BE SAID.

So Trent Lott does his penance by spending his hour on BET, but I don't think that's what the reverend Al meant, I think he meant that Trent Lott will have to burn on the altar of the Black Caucus and Al's Presidential election campaign. LOL!!! I have read this entire thread in hopes of gleaning some reason Lott is going on BET for an hour. Penance, followed by altar sacrafice, surely will purge PC onto his tongue. ;)
I am amazed at all the mind readers and the mileage they are getting over this. Byrd and Gore (and countless others) actually said what they meant with nowhere near this outrage or demands for pennance. Lott, on the other hand, was paying homage to a 100 year old man who is a legend!! Forget the legend, it is lost in what the mind readers claim Lott MEANT.

My letter to the editor regarding this matter will appear in the Washington Times tomorrow (Saturday): Excellent!! Bravo!!!!!!!! Your letter was outstanding!! I am so thankful it is being printed!! It is a message that needs to be heard!!

Mario Cuomo was also a segragationist. He says he's "changed".
BUT...when asked about Jessie Jackson saying "Himie town", it didn't matter, because Lott speaks for the Republican party, Jessie does not speak for the democrat party. (That's what he said!!)
Of course, only a democrat can "change", you know, even though Cuomo ran as a segragationist and Lott didn't!!!

I'm tired of this crap about Lott. Too many people are twisting his words around and making him out to be a racist white boy.
Bullsh-t. Everybody knows what he was referring to with Thurmond's 1948 campaign, and it wasn't segregation. While I realize that he has to at least soothe some people, if I were him I wouldn't have even apologized for my remarks. I would have explained them instead. If that isn't good enough, then I wouldn't want your vote anyway.
Lott should remain Senate Majority Leader!
To: dfwgator
The mere idea of it sounds funnier than a six-pack of Dolemite movies.
To: panther33
I don't really know if he was talking about segregation per se, or the larger issues of states' rights and the fact that this country is not a democracy. Seeing how he has acted this week, he is strictly in CYA mode and cannot articulate a strong position against the onslaught of racialist demogoguery.

...This is all about a Borking. It's a power play by the Democrats...Uh, not quite. It's about winning in 2004. If we want to be the people in power, we better have leaders who truly believe in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, leaders who live it. Senator Lott has not been out front. Sorry.
Trent Lott is a good Senator for Mississippi, but as the Senate Republican Leader he has been very, very weak. We Republicans must have a new majority leader who'll stand up to the Democrats (one who hopefully doesn't have an OMG in his/her FBI files) and be able to move the Administrations ideas into law.
To: veronica
I think he did himself alot of good today.
Well, I thought he stunk. He did not sound anywhere near sincere. Reading his speech, and the speech stunk. He said he was just caught up in the heat of the moment. I hope someone gives him another line. And, I'm sorry to have to say, Lott has always come across to me as somewhat of a bigot, somewhat as an ignorant country bumpkin. He appears to me to be a yes man for whatever the flavor of the moment is. It really does not matter whether he is conservative, repub, dem or green. To me he is simply spineless. Just my thoughts as a black American female.

Wonder if BET will provide members of the audience with real ripe tomatoes.

If I believed he was a racist I'd want him to resign NOW. If that is your impression it's worth considering, I just think he's a boob, not a racist. For me this is about allowing Republicans to be bullied by making false charges of racism, to futher alienate black voters from the GOP.
To: veronica
This is all about a Borking. It's a power play by the Democrats. I hear that but not sure I understand why the RATs would want to Bork Lott.
He gives them everything they want and caves in on every issue.
Hell, he might as well be a RAT.

What was so reprehensible about what he said? Is it not ok for a white person to speak highly of another white person and his ideas?
I am so sick of the apologetic white race. Grow up and get over it. The war is over and white people bend over backwards to kiss black ass. I find the whole thing disgusting.
To: ewing
appeasement is never a good idea. some people can never be satisfied - they will continue to make war on you even after you surrender unconditionally, even go so far as to exhume and defile your dead. These serial apologies do nothing but feed the enemy more ammo. Lott et alia ought instead to politely but firmly tell the BCC to go piss up a rope.
