Sounds a bit like a lefty who hates urban sprawl argument. This person hates it because of the loss of rural community, lefties hate it because of the loss of the inner city life.

Lots of people say they hate urban sprawl, but everybody is moving there!! I don't get it.

Personally I'm a rural guy, moved away from the city and the suburbs. Live on the farm. Intend to keep it that way. If the suburb moves closer, I'll move out further.

Once read a sci-fi novel that depicted the entire Earth as one continuous homogenous strip mall shunned by vacationers who sought genuine cultures. No matter where one landed the same chain entities would be there to blast you with their sameness. It's definitely happening.
