Republicans on Capitol Hill and conservatives in Washington and around the country are discussing how best to call for Trent Lott's stepping aside as Senate Majority Leader.
According to a knowledgeable Senate source, GOP members of both houses are extremely concerned that Lott's comments have so derailed the momentum gained from the 2002 elections that it would be impossible come January to make numerous confirmations for the executive branch, begin planning a legislative agenda that includes accelerating the Bush tax cuts and pushing through a prescription drug plan for seniors.
Even more upsetting to Republicans is that realization that Lott's comments may make it virtually impossible to bring a number of potentially controversial judicial nominations to the Senate floor successfully.

Agree with your assessment of Bill Frist ! The fact that he was the Senator who worked with Karl Rove on the selection/election of Rebublican candidates would guarantee that he would push the President's agenda . . .unlike Lott who was always blurting out something stupid.

Trent rolls over to the Dim's to easily. We really need a leader with some backbone. Bond would make a great leader and he has some balls. I would like to see him as the majority leader. He could be effective and not have this "baggage".

Agreed. We are, and in fact, hold ourselves to a higher standard than our counterparts on the other side of the aisle.
I do not know what is in the man's heart but we can not have people in leadership roles making stupid comments like this.
My choices for majority leader would be Nichols, Brownback or Frist.

If the GOP "leaders" were so concerned about Lott, why did they just re-elect him to the Majority Leader's position? For the second time?
Fear--plain and simple. Lott is a powerful man and fairly vindictive in crushing potential challenges to his leadership. Nickles had announced he would challenge Lott if the GOP won the majority back, but Lott got him to back down. Now, sadly, Lott will become the Newt Gingrich political albatross of the Republican Party that will be used by the RATS to successfully mobilize their base and help them win back both houses of Congress in 2004. Very sad, if he is not replaced because the Republicans will be paralyzed in the Senate and their hold on power made even more tenuous and temporary. I believe in doing what is best for the Republican Party and removing Lott from the Senate leadership is clearly what is best for the party at this time.

I have absolutely no idea why anyone would stand by this guy, particularly conservatives. He has publicly proven himself to be an idiot, not a sin necessarily, but not a quality that you want in a leader. His utter cluelessness is an embarassment to himself, as well as to the rest of the Republican party, and his spineless "leadership" over the past few years makes one wonder what anyone saw in Trent's abilities. All the above make him a perfect representative for the RINO's in the White House and the RNC because they all share these same "qualities".

Tom DeLay, the HAMMER, should take over the GOP Senate I doubt that Senate rules allow a REPRESENTATIVE to serve as Senate majority leader.

You're right - I meant he shouldn't step down as a senator - I'm all for a NEW, TOUGHER Majority Leader!
