WASHINGTON - The Rev. Jesse Jackson called on Sen. Trent Lott to resign as GOP leader yesterday for saying the nation would have been better off had Strom Thurmond been elected President in 1948. The remark about Thurmond - then a committed segregationist - stunned a Capitol Hill party Thursday night marking Thurmond's 100th birthday and retirement from the Senate.
"When Strom Thurmond ran for President, we voted for him," Lott (R-Miss.) said at the party. "And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years."
Jackson phoned NBC's "Meet the Press" yesterday and joined other civil rights leaders in slamming Lott, who will take over as Senate majority leader.

I call on "Reverend" Jesse Jackson to resign from the human race. Soaking his shirt in the blood of MLK led him onto a path of destructive behavior that has ill served his "flock".

This campaign against Lott is going to blow up in their faces. All Lott said is that Thurmond would have been a good president. BFD. Then-president Truman was KKK. And if any current senators need to be looked at, what about KKK Byrd and his 'white ni**er' remarks? Byrd also made a marathon filibuster against a key human rights vote in the 60s. It's just liberal desperation and hypocracy, as usual.

I have little use for Lott and his jellyfish backbone. But the hypocritical Jackson has misled the uninformed for too long. His position of influence is predicated on lies and he has dipped into the pockets of poor black people a la Jimmy Swaggart into the pockets of social security pensioners. He is Elmer Gantry in color.

I'm not a Lott fan either. It appears Clinton had some FBI files over his head back in the '90s. But this is not the way to take him out. Instead, I see opportunity here: TURN THE TABLES ON THEM!

Jesse Jackson doesn't have the moral standing to lecture any one about a violation of civil rights. Trent Lott's comments were probably in bad taste, but being politically incorrect is not a crime in this country and liberals have said far worse things about conservatives. J.J really needs to get over it and move on.

Lott SHOULD resign, but not for this. Rather, he should resign for the way he meekly handed power to D'Asshole last year, the way he ran the impeachment "trial" of S(l)ick Willie in 1999, and the way he diluted virtually everything that came from the House between 1995 and last year.

Lott is a dope. His politically brain dead comment about Thurmond is just the latest example of this guy's awkward stupidity. I actually agree with Rev. Shakedown. for the first and hopefully last time.

Lott won't resign and should not resign.
You guys may as welll come to terms with the fact that Republican Senators, from conservatives like Mitch McConnell, to liberals like Susan Collins, want Lott to be their leader.
It's THEIR choice, not yours.

The timing of this confrontation is actually pretty good if the Republicans choose to fight back. The next election cycle is 2 years away, which gives us enough time to expose Jesse for the con man he really is. This just gives us an vehicle with which to expose him.

It actually only takes a simple majority of Pubbie Senators to elect their leader. As I've never seen who voted for whom publicized, it is not safe to say that any specific Senator other than Trent Cave-A-Lott voted for Cave-A-Lott as majority "leader".
As I doubt there are 25 conservative Republican Senators, Cave-A-Lott was guaranteed victory, especially since he didn't wait for the incoming class to be certified before running his election.

Oh, and one more thing; if they decide to go off the deep end and raise my taxes, should I simply say, "It's THEIR choice, not mine"?

If you want to get rid of Trent Lott, move to Mississippi and vote against him.

All of my Senatorial votes have been for losing Republican candidates from my first participation in '92 (between the fraud that has kept Slimeroad in office and the election-year spending on his NBA team that keeps Kohl so popular, no Pubbie has had a chance here in Cheese Central the last 10 years).

Go Jackson, my brother, go!! This is one case where I support the good revverund!!
The bottom line here is that this will cause Lott to resign!! Come on, liberal media, work your magic! Get those blacks worked up in a frenzy.....

I agree...Herb Kohl wins because Milwaukee and Madison liberals keep voting him in - the rest of the state hates him and Feingold.
On a positive note, at least the Packers came back to kick the Viking's behind last night.

I agree with JJ on this, but not for the same reason: Lott should resign as Majority leader because hes such a putz. And if he really did say those things about Thurmond, hes incredibly stupid and impolitic.
