WASHINGTON- Thirty-two American college students have been selected as Rhodes Scholars, the scholarship trust announced Sunday.

Eight regional committees selected the winners from 981 applicants who were endorsed by 341 colleges and universities throughout the nation.

Rhodes Scholarships, created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes, provide two or three years of study at Oxford University in England. Winners are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor, among other attributes.

One of the winners is Chesa Boudin, a senior at Yale University who is majoring in history. He is the son of Kathy Boudin, a former Weather Underground radical who is in prison for her role in a 1981 robbery that left three people dead. Chesa Boudin is active in criminal justice reform and has spoken around the country about the problems facing children of prison inmates.

Harvard University placed four students, the most of any institution, on this year's list of winners. Columbia, Cornell, Duke and Yale each had two winners.

It's not too impressive a title since Clinton claimed to be one.

Where was his physical vigor though, if he had Monica doing most of the work? And as for integrity, maybe "semantics" is a better word for what Rhodes was looking for when Clinton won such a scholarship.

The Rhodes Scholarships have had an occasional misfire. Try matching the word "integrity" to Billyjeff Clinton, it's like nailing jello to a wall. But over the years, the program has identified some pretty smart cookies.

Based on reading the names, one group is "underrepresented" compared to population -- African-Americans. There is one, from Howard University. Also based on reading the names, there is one group that is "overrepresented" -- Asian-Americans. They are eight of the 32.

This is what high-level admissions based on merit, knowledge and hard work look like, as opposed to admissions based on skin color.

I'm surprised they don't have Chelsea Clinton on that list. Hillary must be steaming mad.

Chelsea's already @ Oxford, isn't she? Is she a Rhodes Scholar? Or maybe some Democrat endowed some new fellowship for her. Either way, the Clintons are now multi-millionaires.

That's precisely why such quotas are necessary and justified. For enlightenment & guidance, feel free to visit:

I wonder if Chelsea Clinton's SAT's were good enough to have gotten her into Stanford on her own merit?

Slick Willie certainly didn't have any of those attributes.
He got in using political influence (Senator Fulbright).

I wish I had the time to investigate every single one of the names on that list. I'll bet I'd found out every single one of them is on there for reasons other than merit.

At least Princess Chelsea isn't on there.

And remember everyone, you're not a Rhodes Scholar until you finish the program. Billy Jeff never did.

She's definitely there because of who Daddy is, but she is most certainly NOT a Rhodes Scholar. (It's really not THAT hard to get into Oxford, BTW. Certain schools within the university, yes; overall, no.)

I have known 4-5 Rhodes Scholars personally in my lifetime. Additionally, I was nominated by my university to apply for the scholarship my senior year (each university "appoints" 2 applicants each year) and went through a portion of the interviewing process.

From my experience, I think I can say a couple of things about Rhodes Scholars. Yes, they are very smart and capable people. Generally, they very much deserve the accolades that they receive. However, the key component in obtaining a Rhodes Scholarship has always been extracurricular activities, not purely academic success. Probably the best way to get one of these scholarships is either to be a particularly smart athelete or to be a precocuious and intelligent liberal crusader. On the other hand, the quickest way to ruin your chances of ever getting one of these scholarships is to publicly advocate anything that could be labelled "coservative." That's just the way things work.

It's obvious from his speeches and his actions he didn't do it on his own. I think Chelsea is not dumber than he is, maybe the same.
