The radical Islamic Caliph Organization, led by the imprisoned Memit Kaplan, will remain outlawed in Germany, pending a possible appeal to the Federal Constitutional Court.
The Federal Administrative Court, rejecting a bid to have the German Interior Ministry's ban on the organization overturned, ruled on Wednesday that the Cologne-based group had forfeited its claims to protection under the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion by making public calls for violence against opponents.
The court ruled that the organization has an aggressive approach toward Germany's democratic order. It has been banned since last December.
Kaplan is expected to be released in about a year from the German prison where he is serving a four-year sentence for incitement to murder after a rival, Ibrahim Sofu, was shot to death by unknown gunmen. A short time before, Kaplan, the self-proclaimed Caliph of Cologne, had publicly called for him to be killed.
