On the bright side, maybe the thieves were planning to take the bags to Hollywood, put them on Barbra Streisand's porch, set them on fire, ring the dorrbell and run.

Man admits theft tale was just poop fiction

12/06/2002

By ROY APPLETON / The Dallas Morning News

The story of the purloined poop sounded good and brought many a chuckle.

Too bad it wasn't true.

Matt Boswell, owner of a pet waste-removal business, had said Wednesday that he watched a man steal two bags of dung from his pickup truck at a Frisco shopping mall.

But Mr. Boswell acknowledged Thursday that he had made up the story.

"It surely didn't hurt anybody," said the 31-year-old Little Elm resident. "It made a lot of people laugh."

Robert W. Mong Jr., president and editor of The Dallas Morning News , said: "This gentleman did not act in good faith with us or our many readers. I personally apologize for this breach of trust."

Mr. Boswell contacted the newspaper this week and discussed the alleged theft in interviews.

A reader contacted the newspaper Thursday, writing that Mr. Boswell was bragging about his ruse in an Internet discussion forum for animal-waste specialists.

"Pretty good little press release I put together Aye?" Mr. Boswell wrote in the forum."(Sure would have been hilarious if it really happened (to me)! shhhhhh...."

Mr. Boswell was contacted and acknowledged the fiction.

"It always helps to get your name out there," he said, when asked why he had contacted the newspaper.

The company's name wasn't included in the newspaper account.

"I'm sorry if I offended anyone," Mr. Boswell said in an interview Thursday.
