NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Times said Wednesday two sports columns about Augusta National Golf Club's men-only membership policy were killed because they failed to meet newsroom standards, not because they disagreed with the stance taken by the newspaper's editorial page.

It saddens me to see the Grey lady slowly kill herself like this.

I never thought I'd be saying it, but:
The Times has become a joke. And to think when I was a kid I thought it'd be great to work there!

Where are the cries of censorship that would rain down on the Washington Times if the shoe was on the other foot?

The Times would be a great newspaper, except all that ink affects its absorbency.

"Newspaper standards" my ass. That's Raines-speak for saying since you don't agree with the party line, it ain't suitable for publication in the New York Times . Of course that's par for what is now New York's NOW house organ.

I guess any publication can have "editorial standards" even if they have to set them at the bottom. The New York times has become nothing but a propaganda piece.

The New York Times lies just like their hero white trash scumbag Clinton. The Agusta National Golf club will do what is right for them regardless what the NYT thinks or writes and that burns their balls (If they have any?)

"We hope no member of our staff really needs this assurance that our news columns enforce no 'party line,"' Boyd said.
Was that said in a straight face?
I disagree that the way the Times is going will hurt it. As a matter of fact, I think it's brilliant. Its position as the "paper of record" is now in the trash, or hope it soon will be. But marketing-wise, the paper has decided that it will serve the niche of ultra-liberal readers. That's a wiser decision than being in objective middle and get savaged by papers both on the right and the left. Its competition are other liberal rags like the Daily News. The New York Post, on the other hand, serves all the conservatives in New York (unfortunately there aren't nearly as many of them). Just like FoxNews, they have a lock on that group since there is no competition.
I predict that the circulation of the Times will actually increase thanks to its rabid liberal twist of the news. However, in the long run, there are so many more national liberal papers than conservative ones that they will hurt each other while the Wall Street Journal and Washington Times clean up.

Just for the sheer comedic effect, I wish ole Hootie would go to the local Hooter's, pick out the sexiest 20 year old Georgia peach and make her a member.

The Washington Times would print the differing stories, and write another highlighting the fact of the widely varying opinions. Of course, that's a REAL newspaper.

You might be right about going left to boost local circulation. But their national credibility is going down the toilet along with it, which is ok with me.

The order must have come from the RNC, through Rush Limbaugh. Al Gore said it was so.

"We hope no member of our staff really needs this assurance that our news columns enforce no 'party line,"' Boyd said. Curious historical coincidence: the editor of Pravda made the identical statement in 1947. One gullible reporter took him at his word and wrote a story mildly critical of Pravda's position of the summer wheat harvest.
He was last seen entering Lubyanka Prison.

I think they should let the first female member be Linda Tripp, or Paula Jones. The TIMES people would have collective strokes!

I take it this news came out too late today for Rush to discuss it. I wonder what he will have to say tomorrow.
