Rush Limbaugh & Vietnam
Self ^ | n/a | Self

Posted on 12/04/2002 11:33:37 AM PST by OldCorps

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh a while ago and some liberal fool came on and said that Sen. John Kerry had "gravitas" (gag me, I'm so tired of that overused word) because he signed up for service with ___ Pershing and the guy who founded FEDEX. How does that give Sen. Kerry gravitas? It seems to me this vignette shows he (Sen. Kerry) is just a spoiled rich boy.

Then the liberal came up and mentioned Rush's being a draft dodger.

I developed a pilonidal cyst while in the Air Force. It's colloquially called "jeep driver's" disease. You must have the enfolding of skin at the coccyx, (tail bone) and then receive a striking blow which inflames the area. A kick in the butt!

I was very fortunate. The cyst was excised and the Air Force doctor assured me that there would be no reoccurrence of this Xlinton!

Would that the body politic were so fortunate!

So in other words Rush is saying that people like Dick Cheney and Trent Lott and Phil Graham and Pat Buchanan and Newt Gingrich and Danny Hastert and maybe even Rush himself would have served if they had been forced to serve? Thanks, I feel so much better about it now.

the ones who are calling "names" are most likely whiney "peacenicks" who would never, ever have served, they would have run off to Canada or gone to college, gotten married or anything they could in oreder to avoid war, they know this (in their hearts) and now they have to call others "chickenhawks" in order to "assuage their guilt" over not only not serving, but in many cases actually protesting and dissing the troops who did go over there (and dishonoring those who did serve, esp. the ones who did not make it back)

You are so right. One of the most ardent users of the "chickenhawk" monikor at work is someone who makes no bones about his going to Canada if he were drafted. What a clueless twit.

Tell 'em Sinky!! Limbaugh's Vietnam deferral is totally irrelevant here. He is not running for any political office.

Just because Kerry and Daschle served in the military doesn't make them better people.

I've had these cysts off and on for most of my life. They're a nuisance and sometimes require medical treatment, but they didn't keep me out of the Army.

John Kerry did a tour in Viet Nam in riverine patrol boats. He came away with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Doesn't sound like a spoiled rich boy to me.

Kerry did his part, unlke the last Democrat they elected to that office. Too bad that the Democrats don't see that sort of thing the same way Republicans do. I don't think it's gonna get him many votes from the "Democratic base".

Oh well, I guess the Democrats have nothing but retreads and rascals to run...

You need a drink, Fury. OldCorps asked if it was true that Rush didn't serve, and I answered. It's your problem if you are offended by my obvious amusement at the "anal cyst" being the cause of his deferment; I wouldn't have written, "hold your hat" if it was a bad back or heart condition, etc.

Take a deep breath and let it out slowly.

I spent four years in navy as corpsman. I treated sailors and marines for the same condition and worse. They recovered and continued to serve their country.

Why can't we just call a spade a spade.

I may have tried anything myself to get out of serving during vietnam. My brother went in the national guard. Not because he thought that he could do just as good a job defending his country by doing so, no, he was scared to death of going to nam. Our neighbor and one his best friends was shot down and killed in nam a year before. That terrified my brother.

My brother never made claim that he was not doing anything else other than avoiding nam by joining the guard.

"It's a strange but true fact that Rush got out of serving in Vietnam because of (hold your hat), an anal cyst. "

LOL - Half a brain / anal cyst - what's the difference in a chickhawk.

You speak for yourself alone. I don't put much credance in the opinion of warmongers that didn't spend one minute in defense of their country. Military service is important to some of us.

My apologies, mg39. I've seen several of these "chickenhawk" threads on FR in the past few months and for several, it's just another attempt, a desperate attempt to stop action against nations who attack or threaten attack against the US.

Why bother with Rush? Leave him alone. Why don't you question why Hannity has on two members of the rock group "Kiss" on today and the conversation may lead to why one of them slept with 4800 women. Ask Hannity why he had to have George Carlin on a few weeks ago. And Hannity said just a few minutes ago that none of this is for ratings.

No problem. Taking a slow deep breath is good for everyone, me included (as is a good drink, too).

With that said...

If it was a legitimate medical condition that kept him out of Vietnam, then that's that. I work in the same suite with Nursing Faculty and I asked them about this type of cyst. Two said there are some that were indeed inoperable and it could be very serious.

If there is indeed an attack on Iraq, the issues that some folks have brought up about GW, etc will again be made issues, I'm sure. We'll all need a drink then! :)

Nonetheless, you needed a good excuse to get out of it.

First of all, he was on the "young" end of the Vietnam draft as he was born in 1950 or 1951, making him a 1968 or 1969 high school graduate. Secondly, he had a college deferrment for awhile because he did attend a couple of semesters of college (I think he said he did a fall semester one year, didn't complete it but tried again the next fall). This puts him up to 1970-71 when the draft was ebbing ("Vietnamization" was the buzzword from Nixon and Kissinger).

Lastly, I think you are right, and he did have a medical reason but I thought it was related to something like a football/knee injury. Anal cyst is as good a reason as any....except in a more militant time, they would have fixed him and sent him anyway.
