Imams Compelled to Learn Dutch Language, Values, Customs
Islam Online ^ | December 3 2002 | Khaled Shawkat

AMSTERDAM, December 3 (IslamOnline) - Dutch Immigration and Integration Minister Hilbrand Nawijn asked Imams and preachers in mosques across the country to use the Dutch language in their sermons.

He also pressed them to convince members of the Islamic minority to comply with the values and customs of the Dutch society.

Imams play a major role in rectifying the negative image of Islam and are steering the Islamic community to merge into the Dutch society, added the minister.

The statements of Nawijn, a member of the far-right List Pim Fortuyn (LPF) party, came Tuesday, October 1, during his inauguration of a school for training Islamic preachers and Imams to only use the Dutch language for their religious sermons.

According to an article published on the Islamic Al-Resala website, the new school will give the preachers and Imams intensive courses as well as lectures on the principal values of the Dutch society, including tolerance, religious freedom, and freedom of expression.

The school will also address some controversial issues such as Hijab and crimes of honor.

The Immigration and Integration Ministry, a newly introduced one, asserted that joining the school is compulsory for all new Imams.

Imams will not be given work permits unless obtaining a graduation certificate from the school, it added, stressing that failure in the school exam or drop-outs would prompt expulsion from the country.

A ministry spokeswoman said that if Imams fail to attend school lectures or refuse to come to the school, this would mean they are not welcomed in the country and would be expatriated.

According to her, the new law applies to new Imams while it would not affect already serving Imams.

She underlined, however, that the government works to convince old Imams to join the school and benefit from its courses.

According to Al-Resala website, 33 scholars have already been registered in the new school, mostly of Moroccan and Turkish origin.

They will be forced to get 600-hour lessons on Dutch language and values and foot the bill, it added.

The Immigration and Integration Ministry only promised them compensation for half the cost, if graduating, said the website.

The new school will be administrated by veteran Muslim activists known for their close ties with the Dutch government circles and their enthusiasm for merging Muslims into the Dutch society.

According to some Muslim activists, the school is a chance for Muslims to rectify misunderstandings inside the small Muslim community and help its members abandon extremists tendencies.

Most Muslims, however, were dumb founded by Nawijn's statements that only Dutch must be used in Holland 450 mosques.

In a related development, Yassein Hartough, a spokesman for the Islam and Citizenship Organization, deemed Nawijn's statements an intervention in religious affairs.

Religious organizations should be given freedom to organize themselves in the way they want, he said.

The new changes in Holland come on the backdrop of the Sept 11 attacks on New York and Washington as well as anti-Islam statements by the far-right opposition leader Pim Fortuyn who was assassinated in May be an environment advocate.

Holland was among the very first western countries to recognize the special nature of the Muslim minority and tried to organize Muslim groups and recognize Muslim schools.

These tolerate stances changed drastically after the arrival of a far-right coalition to the helm of power in Holland.

So, kosher slaughter is forbidden now in Holland and Scandinavian countries. Funny thing, there is now a thriving kosher food industry in Russia, where all such things were formerly prohibited.

Russia is looking better and better.

YEA!!!!!!!!

I am so glad to see this. When we lived there in mid 90s, we took Dutch lessons the whole time and did our best to fit into the customs. I believe in the saying "When in Rome do as the Romans do".

I was appalled at the number of Muslim immigrants who wrote editorials putting down the Dutch and their way of life, especially their love of animals. I have a theory about people who don't like and don't have any respect for animals such as those immigrants. I thought it was cool how the Dutch had lots of cats and dogs, and dogs were allowed in stores even.

Those Muslim immigrants were coming to Holland to take advantage of the better conditions, yet they wanted to change Dutch society to fit their own. So this is very refreshing news indeed!!!!

It's certainly a relief to at least see signs of awakening sanity in Europe regarding the cultish aspects of Islam.

I would suspect Nawijn is Dutch. The "ij" combination is very commonly found in the Dutch language, and BTW it's hard for foriegners to learn to pronounce it properly. And as you may already know the w is pronounced like a v.

Excellent article on the text books used in Islamic schools.

Is anyone reviewing the books used in Islamic schools here in the US?

I doubt it. The ACLU won't have anything negative about their favorite religion.

I don't know if it is really going to happen though.

We are losing on other fronts. December 5 is 'Sinterklaas', the original version of Santa Claus.

But it is held on the same day the islamic Sugarfest is held this year (they have a lunar calender). So some schools decided to hold Sinterklaas on another day.

In our own country, our own festivities, meaning a lot to schildren, have to move for their festivities.

It's no law. And it is not forbidden to preach in another language, he asked them to do it.

This is because, unlike in traditional Catholic Masses in Latin, in several mosques the imams preach hatred and oppose integration (see the links in the comment section just below the article).

Good move!!!

An even better one would be to require an official governmental transcriber in every mosque when these nutcases give a sermon and then publish their sermons in all the major European newspapers. Then MAYBE Europe will wake up.

I wish they could be as dumbfounded in the USA where they preach their venomous witches' brew in Arabic right under our noses!

Coincidentally, I just heard about Saudi books used right here in the US which contain hatred against Christians and Jews. A Saudi American who is researching this is living in fear for his life. I believe his organization is called Saudi Institute. He was on Fox News today.

Thanks for the info. I looked around and found The Saudi Institute's web site. Looks interesting. They have a page titled Saudis Spread Hate Speech in U.S. that discloses literature Saudi nationals are distributing in Washington, DC (in arabic). While this literature is not an actual textbook used in the schools, they claim the information makes its way into the Islamic schools via those to whom the literature is distributed.

I think I'll check around and see if there is a way to get a list of textbooks used at the Islamic schools in the area. Surely there is a way.

Let's apply Dutch best practices here: Let's have an integration minister. The first thing the minister should do is to cancel all misnamed bi-lingual education (it's actually education in spanish only). This type of education prevents hispanics from learning English which usually is their ticket to opportunity.

I love what the Dutch have done with that new school. By the way, arabic for school is madrassah!
