DEDHAM - A Quincy dominatrix gave conflicting statements to police about where she and her boyfriend dumped the dismembered remains of one of her clients after he died of an apparent heart attack, a prosecutor said Friday.

A Norfolk County grand jury earlier this month handed up a secret indictment charging Barbara McLaughlin Asher and Miguel Ferrer in connection with the death of Michael Lord, 53, of North Hampton, N.H., nearly 2

This case has always seemed odd to me. The woman lures the man to her apartment. Takes his money. Ties him up. He ... uh ... ends up dead. She dismembers the body. She hides the body parts and pretends that nothing ever happened.

She admits all this, and yet there seems to be some doubt as to whether a serious crime occurred.

Ya know, there are some men who have done this to some women. But as soon as the guy is caught, everybody knows right up front that the guy is a crazy serial killer who should not walk the streets. Guess it's different for girls.

This story raises more questions than it answers. If there is no evidence (no body, no physical means of death), how did the newspaper get the details of how Lord died?

If she disposed of the body, instead of calling the Rescue Squad, because she was afraid of the IRS (!?!), has the IRS started an audit of her finances? It sounds as if she was not reporting the income from her Dominatrix "services".

Why the 2 1/2 year wait to press charges? What has she been doing in the meanwhile?

Miguel Ferrer? Not the actor from one of my all-time fave flicks, Robocop, I hope.

"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

You guys have some good questions. I don't know if the IRS was ever involved. You have to wonder how much she made doing her kinky side show stuff. She was charging this guy $300.00; are there enough customers for that stuff to earn a living? I noticed that her boyfriend is now in Argentina, yet, he says he'll come back to stand trial. Sure, I believe that.

Here's another, older story that speaks somewhat to the matter of what evidence the cops may have. Enjoy.

Police affidavit is inaccurate, Quincy dominatrix asserts

The Patriot Ledger
Author:
Elizabeth W. Crowley, Date: 10.14.00

QUINCY - The Quincy dominatrix at the center of a bizarre tale of sadomasochism and death says she wishes she had never talked to police.

Barbara McLaughlin Asher said Friday that her version of what happened the day one of her clients died in her Wollaston condo doesn't square with what police are saying.

Fearful that anything she divulges now could be used against her, Asher declined to specify which parts of the two stories don't jibe.

"All I can say is it's very frightening. My whole life has been turned upside down. It makes it sound like I'm some crazed killer," Asher said in a telephone interview.

"I don't think I said exactly what the police said I said. This whole thing is sort of a made-up thing," Asher said Friday, shortly after affidavits filed by police in support of search warrants for her condo and car were unsealed in Quincy District Court.

The 51-year-old Norwood native was known by her clients as "Lauren M" and went by the name Lauren Mathews.

Asher said news coverage of the death and dismemberment of her client, Michael Lord, 53, of North Hampton, N.H., has been misleading. Lord died July 3 while tied up in what Asher referred to as her "dungeon" at the Mellen-Bray condominiums on Weston Avenue.

"It's like I'm listening to a description of someone else, not myself," Asher said of the publicity surrounding the case and her career in the sadomasochistic world.

"I dearly love this profession, this dedication," Asher said. "It is adult erotic play. It is not sexual. ... It's a lot different from what people on the outside think of it."

Asher said she practices a light form of sadomasochism that does not involve hurting her clients. "I've never broken any skin on anyone," she said.

She said she feels sorry for Lord's family.

"I have a lot of sympathy for the Lord family. That is all I can say," she said. "At some point, if I am able to talk to (them), I would like to."

She declined to comment on why police have been unable to find Lord's remains even after an extensive search in a Maine landfill. Police searched there because of information Asher gave them.

Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating has not filed charges against Asher or her boyfriend, Miguel Ferrer, who she says cut up Lord's body with a saw and helped her get rid of it. A spokesman for Keating's office said Friday that the investigation continues.

According to an affidavit filed by state police Sgt. Dermot Moriarty, Asher told investigators that she had arranged to meet with Lord at her condo at 6 p.m. July 3. The encounter would cost Lord $300 - and his life.

Asher told police she put a leather collar around Lord's neck and a hood over his head before tying him to a bondage rack and placing restraints on his waist and genitals.

While Asher was out of the room changing into her dominatrix outfit, Lord started making rustling noises and flailing his arms, the report says. She told police Lord "suddenly stopped breathing."

Not sure what to do, Asher reportedly called Ferrer at the apartment they share at 100 Marina Drive. When he arrived at the condo, the couple untied Lord and tried to revive him but couldn't, the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, she told police that she and Ferrer decided to leave the body in the condo while they returned home to Marina Bay for the night. She said Ferrer wanted to call police but that she was afraid that they would confiscate her condo.

The couple decided instead to dismember Lord's body so they could get it out of the condo without anyone seeing, according to the affidavit.

On July 4, they went back to the condo and put Lord's body in the bathtub. Ferrer cut it up with a double-bladed handsaw, the affidavit states. Meanwhile, Asher went to the nearby Victory Supermarket and bought plastic bags and cleaning supplies.

According to the affidavit, Asher told police that she and Ferrer filled eight double bags with Lord's body parts, left them in the condo and drove Lord's 1985 Ford Mustang to a Red Roof Inn in Salem, N.H., and abandoned it.

During the late afternoon of July 5, they went back to Mellen-Bray for the body, piled the bags into Asher's 1994 Nissan Maxima, drove to Augusta, Maine, and dumped them in a restaurant dumpster, according to the affidavit.

Police said Asher told them she and Ferrer threw away Lord's clothing - he was wearing a white T-shirt, shorts and boat shoes - his wallet with $24 cash in it and the rags and sponges she had used to clean the bathtub in a dumpster in Quincy.

According to the affidavit, Lord's son Timothy reported him missing July 14. Four days later, Salem, N.H., police found Lord's car. New Hampshire investigators traced Lord's final hours to Quincy by tracking his phone calls. The calls allegedly led police to Asher.

Police found two power saws inside Asher's condo but did not find a handsaw like the one she described, according to the court documents unsealed Friday.

They took a swab sample from the edge of Asher's bathtub. Sources close to the investigation have said the sample contains blood. Keating has refused to discuss what evidence his office has.

Police took pieces of the shower and bathtub for testing and confiscated several tools of the sadomasochistic trade, including a black paddle with metal studs, six leather masks, three black collars, a black hood and two black leather restraining devices.

At the end of her interview with police Aug. 9, Asher signed a consent form allowing investigators to search her condo and car. Ferrer wouldn't answer any questions from police.

Asher wishes she had done the same.

"My main problem, I feel, is that I talked to the police at all," she said. "I was stupid to talk to them. When you get a visit from the police at 8:30 in the morning, you can bet it's not a social call."

World weary sort that I am, I balk not at the "lady's", uh, hobbies. This is the part that gets me the most:

He said Asher went to the nearby Victory Market and bought plastic bags and cleaning materials. After she returned, Ferrer used a hacksaw to slice up Lord's body, he said.
Ugh!

I agree! It is one thing to be a dominatrix but another to passively let another human being die then callously dispose of the body. Creepy does not cover that behavior. She and her pals need to be put somewhere with "real" bars for the rest of their lives (no media allowed). I feel unclean for some reason :-(

She certainly didn't "dominate" or "intimidate" the cops. What a loon. I agree, if you can chop up a person, you belong behind bars.

From today's Los Angeles Daily News:

Dominatrix charged with manslaughter

By Associated Press

QUINCY, Mass. -- A dominatrix whose client died after she put a hood on his head and strapped him to a rack in a crucifix position pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and cutting up his body to dispose of it.

Barbara Asher, 53, was released after her arraignment Friday. She has no prior criminal record and has not attempted to flee since Michael Lord's disappearance in July 2000.

Police said Asher told them that after Lord died in her Quincy apartment, she panicked. She said her boyfriend, Miguel Ferrer, cut up the body while she went for trash bags and that they later dumped it in a restaurant trash bin in Augusta, Maine.

No body parts have been found, however, and tests on a saw and material from Asher's home didn't turn up enough evidence to charge her or Ferrer.

Prosecutor Robert Nelson said a March ruling by the Supreme Judicial Court in a fire that killed six firefighters opened the way for charges in Asher's case. In that case, the court ruled that a homeless couple's decision not to report the fire they had started was reckless enough to warrant manslaughter charges.

Nelson said Asher's failure to help Lord was similarly reckless.

"She had a duty to act at the time, to take him off the rack ... and call appropriate medical response teams," Nelson said. Prosecutors are unsure how Lord died, but Nelson said he may have asphyxiated.

Asher told police that she didn't call for help because she was afraid of IRS and police scrutiny of her business, Nelson said.

Asher's attorney, Kevin Reddington, said he was "confident that a court, after review of the lack of evidence, will dismiss the indictment."

If convicted, Asher faces a maximum 20 years in prison on the involuntary manslaughter charge and six months for improper disposal of a body. Ferrer is to be arraigned sometime in December on a charge of accessory to involuntary manslaughter after the fact.

I feel a DFU-type song around this story...but I can't make it rhyme. The original:

All in the merry month of may
When sweet blooms all were swellin'
Sweet William on his deathbed lay
For love of Barbara Allen...

The story gets weirder. The newspaper account states that Lord did not have a history of heart problems. The rumors floating around on the BDSM boards (you can find ANYthing on the 'net) are that Lord not only had a heart condition, but that he had had heart surgery a year before his death, that he was on medication, and that he had been known to save up his medication for recreational purposes. They also say that Lord, in spite of what his family says, was a regular client of "Mistress Lauren." How the posters "know" this information, which is contrary to what has been released publically, is not specified.

BTW, the outrage over Ms. Asher and Mr. Ferrer's actions is even greater in the BDSM Bulletin Boards than here, if possible. There is much speculation that her involvement in Lord's death was more than passive neglect (or else why would she try to destroy the body?).

I can see the thought of the IRS coming after you could get you to do weird things you might not otherwise do.
