Zinn documentary bites justice system
JESSE J. SMITH, Freeman staff
April 18, 2003

Six years after serving a six-month prison stint for violating campaign finance laws, town of Ulster entrepreneur Michael Zinn is putting the criminal justice system on trial in a documentary film called "Mad Dog Prosecutors."

Zinn's documentary argues that all Americans, law-abiding and otherwise, are at risk from a legal system that grants federal attorneys the power to conduct scorched-earth prosecutions for minor violations of business regulations.

* * *

Following an 18-month investigation, Zinn was indicted on conspiracy charges related to his work as finance chairman of then-Assemblyman Maurice Hinchey's [a democRAT, now a member of the U.S. House of Reps, New York] first campaign for the House of Representatives in 1992. According to the indictment, Zinn reimbursed employees and their relatives for contributions to the Hinchey campaign under the guise of bonuses, essentially using his staff to launder illegal contributions from the company.

In June 1997, Zinn, facing up to eight years in prison, cut a deal with U.S. Attorney Eliot Jacobsen, pleaded guilty to three counts of the indictment, and was sentenced to six months in prison.

Zinn says he was the victim of bad legal advice by a lawyer for the Hinchey campaign and Besicorp's counsel, who advised him on his fundraising activities and never hinted that he could be breaking the law.

"I was close to the edge," he said. "But I never had criminal intent that is necessary to prove the charges against me." Zinn said he reluctantly pleaded guilty on the advice of his lawyer and to avoid a harsh prison term if convicted at trial.

Voter rights highlighted at the polls

INDIANAPOLIS - Lawmakers and state officials are using today's municipal primary elections to promote the "Indiana Voter's Bill of Rights," a new document that summarizes voting procedures and protections.

Secretary of State Todd Rokita said Monday he sent posters of the document, in both English and Spanish, to each county so they could be displayed in polling places for the first time. The text of the document was approved by the Indiana Election Commission in March.

The document states who is eligible to vote, procedures to follow if your name is not on a polling list, what rights you have if your eligibility is challenged, and penalties for voter fraud.

One of the provisions says if you need help voting because you are disabled or cannot read English, you have the right to receive assistance. It can be from a poll worker or someone you choose, but cannot be your employer or union representative.

Another provision says if you vote for too many candidates running for the same office or make another mistake, you are entitled to receive another ballot.

"It is our top priority to safeguard every Hoosier vote," Rokita said at the Statehouse with lawmakers and election officials. They included Margie Chavez of Indianapolis, who said the document was important to the state's growing Hispanic population.

(Note: Secretary of State Todd Rokita is a Republican; Indiana's Governor is Frank O'Bannon, a Democrat.)

I tried to get this article to come up, to no avail....perhaps one of you can do so:

In any event, I thought it looked VERY interesting! (The search term I used in Google was "vote fraud" and then clicked on the "news" tab.....

Minnesota: Same old stuff from the Democrats trying to prevent vote fraud reform!

House Looks to Toughen Voter Registration Rules

The Minnesota House has passed a bill that would require voters to show a photo identification upon registering to vote.

Anyone without a photo ID could sign an affidavit stating they don't have one. The bill would also require students who want to register to vote on election day to have a valid ID with a current address.

Republicans who back the bill say it would ensure voters have proper identification and that students vote in the proper precinct.

DFL Representative Keith Ellison says the bill assumes people are trying to commit voter fraud. Instead, he says Minnesota should have an election system that encourages voting.

An election reform bill awaiting action in the Senate doesn't have the photo ID and student address requirements.

Vote Fraud Ping!

Oregon:

Citizenship-proof mandate for voting gets sidetracked

The bill would reduce election fraud, says Rep. Betsy Close.

PETER WONG
Statesman Journal
May 7, 2003

A bill requiring Oregonians to show proof of citizenship before they register to vote for the first time was detoured Tuesday.

Its potential price tag prompted a House committee Tuesday to ship the bill to the Legislature’s joint budget committee — not without controversy — and could strand the bill.

Rep. Betsy Close, R-Albany, is the chief sponsor of House Bill 2813.

“I think it is difficult to determine, in the country like we have, who is a citizen and who is not because so many of us have ethnic background — and that’s the greatness of our country,” Close said.

“But we have to be sure that those who have gone through the hurdles of getting citizenship have the privileges that it offers — and voting is a privilege.”

A contrary view was expressed by Rep. Phil Barnhart, D-Eugene, who said young people could be harmed as much as newly naturalized citizens.

“There has been no showing that this bill is necessary to prevent fraud in registering to vote by those who are not citizens,” Barnhart said. “The bill is dangerous because it will reduce to some extent who should vote.”

The House Rules Committee, on a 5-2 vote, sent the bill to the Legislature’s joint budget committee. Because it proposes to allow elections officials in 36 counties to check driver records for proof of citizenship, which they do not list now, it comes with a price tag. Estimates range from $70,000 to $120,000.

Close said the state has compiled about half a dozen allegations of citizenship fraud in the past dozen years. But Barnhart said that only one of the six people actually cast a ballot — and that person was not prosecuted.

Close said that the six cases are justification enough for her bill, which would require copies of birth certificates, naturalization documents or valid passports as proof of citizenship.

No other states have such a blanket requirement.

Oregon imposes a maximum five-year prison term and $100,000 fine for someone lying about citizenship, residency or age on a voter registration card. The penalty dates to 1985.

“We have no evidence it’s a huge problem, and there’s already a severe penalty in the law,” said Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, the state’s chief elections officer. “It’s an incredible complication for people registering to vote for the first time.”

Rep. Joanne Verger of Coos Bay was the only Democrat to join the Republicans voting for it.

“I think we have made things too easy in this country,” she said. “As far as requiring citizenship (proof) for people registering to vote, I have absolutely no problem with this bill.”

Rep. Laurie Monnes-Anderson, D-Gresham, said: “If they are illegal, they do not want their name or address on any document.”

Well, I do need to get the thread updated. I have been really busy. I have a week off week after next and I hope to get to work on it then.

What do you think of this for a new slogan for the upcoming election?

.

HEY DEMOCRATS: STFU!

By the way, There is new episode that we all need to raise some fuss about. Budge already heard it. Did y'all hear Alan Colmes the other night (Monday, I believe it was) trying to resurrect the false notion that blacks are being intimidated by Republican poll watchers? This was obviously referring to the situation with STR in Arkansas. We need to make darn sure we don't have a replay of the blacKKK NAACP playing their games at the polls in Jefferson County. Alan has been corrected on what actually happened after the fact, so in my opinion, he just doesn't care and is downright lying to make a point. I have always given him credit for at least being halfway honest before, even if he isn't the brightest bulb in the package.

Well.....we're all very busy, it seems, sweetliberty; I don't think a new thread is at a critical point, yet, so, IMHO, don't worry about posting one in the near future.....but you could start gathering stuff up....I know, that will take forever in itself. Perhaps you could "assign" me to look for links to a particular state or subject, and I'm sure Budge and TheLion wouldn't mind helping......just let me know, I'll do whatever you might find helpful for ya.

I will FReepmail you later about slogan. : )

NO! I didn't watch the other night......this must be the new "Rat talking points." Excellent idea to actively counter this in a new thread! I will start looking for any information I can to help on that.

Touch-screen voting is scary.
But I find at least as scary that people believe manufactured polls like "43% want to keep Davis" (SURVEY USA, 10/6/03) . I mean any idiot should be able to see from the rallies (for instance a total of 35 supporters showed up to hear Davis at Long Beach) that this is

IMPOSSIBLE

. But it is the tacit acceptance of such polls that lays the basis for the coming fraud counting the votes.

You know, it is things such as that that prove, in my opinion, that they are commiting fraud. If they have nothing to hide, why do they object to safeguards for the elections? Seems the answer is in the question. Thanks for the info.

Agreed; in case you didn't catch my comment on that thread:

>Just damn. So they want to be free to continue to stuff the ballot boxes without any oversight, I guess.

And if you're running a ping list on this topic, go ahead and get me on it. I really should go figure out how to be a poll watcher. I pinged my State legislator several months ago about touch-screen voting. I really hate the system, recognized the potential early, and have been gratified to see so many articles on the subject.

Got you on the list. It is pretty easy to become a poll watcher. At least it is here....of course the RATs here have tried to outlaw poll watchers too. Funny how THEY don't see the need to have their OWN poll watchers, even though they can, but instead focus on getting rid of GOP poll watchers. That says to me that they have the "fix" all worked out and we get in their way. Awwwww.....too bad. That is exactly what we're SUPPOSED to do morons!

Anyway, the procedure for being a poll watcher is basically to contact your Republican party headquarters or the office of any GOP candidate. Poll watchers can also be sponsored by those proposing a ballot initiative.
